Yeah...driving home a couple weeks back and seeing a trail of smoke behind me. Not good. Stopped at intersections, smell tranny fluid burning. Not good. Feeling the clutch pedal get softer and softer. Not good. Let it sit for a couple days til I had the free time, then get down to business.
NOT my ideal way to start a Saturday morning...
Get it pulled apart, wtf?!?!?
One of the six pressure plate bolts had worked its way loose, and rub-rub-rubbedy-dubbed itself through the aluminum.
As you can see it did a nice little dance around inside before exiting.
Luckily I had my old stock trans laying around, and threw it back in the car for the time being. The trans with the hole has a Quaiffe in it, and I miss it already
Do I weld the hole shut? Do I split the trans and swap bellhouses, which may require re-shimming the diff side bearings? Do I swap diff units between the two trans? Hmmm decisions decisions...

Split the bellhousing and swap cases. better safe than sorry.
Super bummer dude.....you'll figure it out...!
Bill, just split both cases and swap over the diffs. Its a pretty simple job actually.
Just make sure you get the plug on the inside of the bellhousing and the oil diverter behind it.
i welded my on my old tahoe and its still fine 4 years later.
but if i would have had an extra trans at the time i would have swapped it.
just a thought.
My car was made with wrenches, Not chopsticks.
