Twin Cam/Quad 4 guys check this out.
Monday, March 17, 2008 7:58 PM
Well i was in the junk yard to day going threw a few quads and came across something i have never seen.

Car was a 80s Cutlass SL
Had a dual chain timing set up like many 2.3L Also had a Lo tubular intake manifold along with the tubular exhaust manifold.

The thing i noticed tho was the the cam towers cams. look a bit beefier and the lifter bores are also sleeved with steel bores unlike most 2.4 and 2.3 with just the aluminum bores.

here's a few pics.

My old 2.3l cam tower bores with the normal aluminum bores.

2.3l normal looking cam caps.

Now the new cam tower bores with the steel sleeves also have aluminum bushings for oil feed to the lifters.

New 2.3l cam cap.

Does any one know any info or if theres any reason these are differant or ever seen them before?

Thanks,

Paul

Also the intake cam in it reads 355 lift. Haven't got the exhaust side yet.

DAMN paul, you weren't bs'ing when you said they look better... i like! they really do look much nicer.

definitely have not seen ANYTHING remotely close to them before, but like every other 'rare' or 'new' 2.3 find somebody comes across it gets shot down by an expert that knows exactly what the deal is. but if not and they are some weird one off thing GM did, awesome!!!!

Wanting a nice set of black 17's with mint tires? Pm me.

I really wonder why they stopped making the cam tower covers flat and put the crease in them. Maybe to make them stronger but I bet the reason for the newer style was for better venting and cooling of the head and to relieve heat from the under the IDI cover. Just judging by the pics the newer style would provide better venting and cooling.

I can understand what Wade is saying about venting heat. But this is the only 2.3-2.4 that i have ever seen with steel lifter bores and the flattened cam caps.

Any body have any info if theres anything special about them or the engine there on?

I have seen the flat ones before although they are not that common. I never thought to pull one off and look at the bottom so the different lifter bores is something new to me. I don't see anything wrong with plain alluminum ones. Sure alluminum wears more than than the steel sleeved but this does not seem to be a problem on the 2.3/2.4

It could be the first year of a production quad 4. ( I think 1989 ).

I think these are the cam specs for the 89 LD2. The LD2 cams changed in 1990 and stayed the same until 95

LD2 (1989) Cam Specs
212 degrees @ .050” with .345” lift for the intake
212 degrees @ .050” with .345” lift for the exhaust
