The beater gets a complete makeover in a weekend
Monday, July 04, 2005 11:41 AM
Well my Cavalier was in pretty bad shape as far as rust goes. As in there were no rear quarters left Well this weekend I headed out to Toms place and we got to work on getting rid of what we could. Well i didnt expect too much, but GAWD DAYUM!!!! It turned out about a million times better than I thought, Tom worked what seemed to be miracles in the VERY short amount of time we had. I will let the pictures do the talking...
The drivers side when we started.

And this was the REALLY bad side, the passengers side, well what was left of it anyways

We started with the drivers side first, this is after we cut out the rusted area.

And after Tom welded in the top half of the replacement piece.

You can see how safe Tom is, notice the welding mask!!

This is the lovely hole that was in the drivers side door-jam.

I didnt get any pics of the drivers door jam, but it was welded up.
Here the drivers side is in body filler still needing to be sanded.

We then turned our attention to the nightmare side, there wasnt really a quarter panel or rocker left, so we cut it off the whole length and started from scratch. Notice the rust we found underneath, that was taken care of aswell.

Here is the new piece welded in at the top but not bottom and not bent or cut yet.

Here is the new piece welded in, I think the coolest part of this is that the seam looks like it came from factory, good job Tom.

This is the hole that was in the passengers side door jam.

And here it is welded, not grinded yet.

Grind Tom grind!

Passengers side filled and being sanded.

Little primer, little spray balm, she turned out like this...

Same deal on the drivers side, turned out like this...

And the passengers side outside.

There are a few more small spots on the car that will be dealt with soon. We just ran out of time on Saturday. Keep in mind that we did all that work on friday for 4 hours and Saturday for about 8. I then headed home and installed the RK Sport IF front and sides that I still had lying around aswell as the Z rims. I cant believe how this turned out. It looks like a completely different car than it did on Friday. I am picking up my rear Z24 bumper and installing my exhaust today or tomorrow.

Leave comments, good or bad.

Turned out nice on the outside... without treating that inner rust you will be hating life in a few years.

They should've removed all rust areas and seal the entire area other wise the oxidation will just continue on the inside of the fender.

But that is sweet looking right now, sell it before the cancer spreads.

Just my opinion based upon facts

in his sig it says he is from toronto and they use a sh!t load of salt on the roads during the winter,so that would account for the car rusting that bad.
by the way nice job on gettin her all fixed up.looks clean.

Wow that looks fantastic. I hope you did everything right, because it'd be sad to see you have to redo it again at some point, but from what I can see from the pics, looks like you did a fairly good job

Looks great!

Thanx for all the comments guys. This car is still my beater, but it gets driven in the summer for now aswell. We treated the inner as much as we could, we rewelded a few of the support structures.
It really is quite amazing eh Jeremy? Im quite happy with it. I picked up the rear bumper today, spray balmed it and installed it, looks much better. The exhaust will go on tomorrow at work.
Now this part will shock you guys... So far, everything you see(including the purchase price of the car) has cost me about $1200...CANADIAN!!!
More pics tomorrow once the exhaust is on.

About time you got it done and now your car is looking really sweet! I still wished you would able get to keep and finish the GTPCavfire with the 3.8 SC!
Keep it up bud!
