effects of swapping out gauge cluster

If a person were to rip out the gauge cluster of '95 cav and install a different cav gauge cluster (one that is identical) with a different odometer reading, wouldn't this falsely indicate the total amount of miles that are on the car that it is now currently installed in???
Is there a way to fix this??? Is it bad??? Does it make any difference??? Are these stupid questions???
It's just something I've been curious about for awhile.......

Your '95 has a mechanical odometer, so there is no way to change the reading. No, it's not bad nor does it make any difference, as long as it's replaced with an identical unit. For example, if you replace your 150000 mile cluster with an 80000 mile cluster, the mileage will just start tracking from 80k. So yes, it would falsely indicate the actual miles on the car. You should only switch your cluster if it is broken, not to lower the mileage. (hopefully that's not what youre trying to do).

On cars with a digital odometer display, the mileage is stored in the PCM so the mileage is not affected if you change the cluster. hope this helps clear it up for you.

FYI - the mechanical odometers are swappable. When i swapped out my non-tach cluster in my 96 for one with a tach, we just swapped odometers too. I never had a problem with it.

For digital cluster cars, the mileage began being stored in the PCM/BCM with the '00 models. The late '98 and '99 digital custer models have the mileage stored in the cluster.
