Removing Shift Knob
Tuesday, November 18, 2008 5:34 PM
I have a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. I was wondering how I would go about changing my shift knob. I was looking at a Razo white shift knob. I used to have a 1998 Cavalier, but forget how I took the old knob off. With these newer cavaliers, they have the thing where you pull up under the shift knob, to put the car in reverse. This is all new to me, where can I get detailed instrutions on changing shift knobs? thanks!

umm should be a little metal thing that looks like a staple, in front of the knob, under the shift button.pry it out with a small screwdriver and dont lose it. after the staple is out, pull up on the knob and thats it! install is reverse of removal

there is no clips they are press fitted, so either cut it in half or let your imagination do its thing!

my 03 has the clip, but its an auto. the standard trans is probably just pushed on, grab and twist

I have an 03 manual. Just twist and pull. Don't do it to many times or it won't stay on there good after a while.

I used to work on the 2003 grand ams and the shifter is the same. There is a metal clip that holds the shifter in place. Pull it out and set it aside. When you get the boot that you want, place the shifter knob back on and put the clips back in. Make sure that the clip is all the way in.

For auto trannys, not manuals.

i am still having trouble with this shift knob coming off. i have a 2003 cavalier 2.2l ecotec engine with 5 speed manual. under the shifter is a lever that you pull up and then move the shifter down right to put it in reverse. ive tried pushing/pulling and twisting the knob off and it does not come out. i pulled the boot off completely and there's like a giant staple on there facing the front of the car. do i pull this out and the whole assembly comes out or how do i do it? is a short shifter a good investment, because it looks like it would just bolt on there, i thought it was much harder than that to install. please respond asap, because i am still working on this!

Get the short shifter...it's easier in the end lol.

If you can't just pull off the knob, you'll probably have to cut it off...I did with my 03. They're heated and then pressed on.

DONT CUT IT. i have a short shifter in mine, i use the stock knob. way better.

the way i did it, pull the shifter assembly and all, flip it over, put it in a vice, and grab it by the shifter body, then take a flat punch, and hit on the reverse lockout downward and it will pop it all off, its just press fit on.
make sure to mark the cables so you get them back to right.

The shifter in a manual is jsut like they stated it is pressed on. Just grab it and pull up like crazy. I had a hard time getting mine off in my 00. Just keep at it and you will eventually get it off.

Yep finally got the bugger, after trying for several days at like 5 minute intervals....but it's finally off...only problem now is I can't get my aftermarket one to stay in because the rod isn't threaded like my other one, it just has bubbles on it...sigh
justin

is there a glue i could use?

Use JB weld, that should hold it on nicely.

Any kind of epoxy. Just go to any auto parts store and see what they have.
