i have a 98 cav and i it doesnt have a rpms guege in the cluster so i am wanting to get a tach guage but i dnt want one with a shift light but a a smaller one than 5 in so are there any good brands that i should be looking for?? any web sights
Just swap in a 98' cluster w/a tach. Its a direct swap.
so would it be easyer to swap my dash out with a z24 .....would it fit in mine and how much would that cost???
I pick up my cluster for my 96' out of a RS cavy from a junkyard for $20. I had to swap odometers, but that wasnt hard at all. If you have the digital odometer then make sure the cluster you do get has it too. A 2000+ wont work due to different plugs and mounting bolts, but if u get one from anothe 98' its just a plug and play deal.
^^Exactly, when I had a 2.2 in my car, I didnt have a tach either.. I just swapped it out with a cluster that had a tack..
There is a procedure in doin this, as far as the pcm learning the new cluster..

Oh yea i forgot about that. I had to let my car sit with the key in the "run" position for 10 minutes for the comp to relearn the secruity code.

however you forgot to mention that the 95-99 clusters, the milage is stored in the cluster so if it is digital, then the new cluster will not have the right milage on it.
I wasnt sure about that, cuz my 96 isnt digital and i just swapped odometers. And my 03' is stored in the BCM. I have only read about the pre 2000 digital odometers. Anyway just search for the cluster swap, alot of peolpe have asked about it and done it.
yea ive replaced mine before in my 98 but it had a mechanical milage and it was easy to swap out. if your car is 95-99 you have to get the year of your car. 00+ doesnt matter as long as its an 00+
okay i decided im nt gonna switch them out becouse i dnt want to go threw the hassle becouse i just got it switched to blue leds but idk im just gonna go with a tach but with out a shift light so does anyone no any good brands or web sites

That's the tach I'm using right now. There are better ones out there but since I only wanted it out out of curiousity, I didn't need anything expensive. It's pretty accurate and I've yet to have any problems with it.
Just save yourself some frustration and find a used Autometer 9117 Tach Adapter. I got mine for about $40 shipped and I've had a working tach ever since. As far as mounting, I've got mine in a single a-pillar pod but you could mount it on the steering column or do something custom.
well you have a 98 and you dont have a tach in your cluster. so assuming since your profile isnt filled out you have a 2.2 which means you need a tach adaptor also. i have a autometer 3" tach and autometer tach adaptor that ill sell you for 50+ shipping. the adaptor alone was 75

you think u could post me a picture or something?
and or you selling both for 50 ?
Isnt the pre-2000 clusters lit by bulbs and sockets in the back of the cluster? I know my 96 was and the 2000+ have LEDs attached right to the circuit board. If your cluster does have the bulbs and sockets the changing the color isnt that big of a deal at all and would be alot easier than wiring up a aftermarket tach.

yes both for 50+ shipping.
heres a pic of the adaptor
as far as the tach, i dont have a picture of it and i cant find it on autometers site, but its a black face tach that goes from 1-10 i believe and it has a chrome housing. it mounts right to the dash or anywhere else you'd like to mount it. i can get pics of it this weekend when i go to my parents house

Dude, you'd be getting an Autometer Tach and Adapter for about $60 shipped. I'd jump on that in a heart beat if I didn't already have both.

Taken from this post...

...that was fourth on the list of "Tach" Search in the Interior forum.
That setup ran me about $70 for the tach, adapter and single pillar pod.
Meant to post in Newbies forum but got that thread and this thread mixed up...
My bad
YO WAT GUYS IM ALSO HOOKING UP A TACH,IS THERE ANOTHER PLACE I CAN GET THE WIRE OR WIRES OTHER THEN THE COIL PACK MABEY IN THE CAR ....AND WAT COLOR IT IS ......HELPPPPP MEEE PPLLEEEEAAASSEEEE.
coil pack is the easiest and best place. there are 2 harness' coming from the coil pack. a 6 pin and a 2 pin. there should be a purple or pink wire coming out of the 2 pin harness, thats the one you need to splice into. i have pics on my cardomain page showing how to install a tach
