map light question
Saturday, January 12, 2008 7:54 PM
I decided to swap out my ugly sand colored headliner from my 00' sunfire with one from a 96' sunfire that is graphite like the rest of my interior. Anyway... the new headliner has the maplights built into the dome light along with an assist handle and a storage compartment. Installing it went well, but I have one problem which I think I solved but I'm not sure... maybe one of you guys can help. The new dome light has three wires... a orange, a white, and a black. The wiring that is in my car for the light only has the orange and white wires. I spliced the wires together, minus the black one and the lights work well, they shut on and off like they do, but the map lights don't come on independently when you push the button for them to come on. I'm guessing that black wire was to give them power when the door isn't open or the switch on the dash isn't on. So I'm wondering what I can do about that... can I run a wire from the unconnected wire to another source of power? and where could I find one that wouldn't drain my battery or screw something up? any help would be appreciated!

The black wire is a ground for the map lights. Just ground it to the body somewhere. I had to do that when i put a mirror with lights in my car.

how do you ground on the roof without poking into the outside?

so if I ground it... would that make the map lights work on their own?
