removing stock shift boot

i am have a B&M short shifter but i am about to shorten the shift lever even more and was looking into making a new shift boot out of suede but when i tried to remove the stock shift boot i couldn't seem to figure it out without what was looking like to be breaking the black trim piece holding the stock boot on. Is there something i am missing or not seeing for an easier way to remove the boot. Please let me know.

Push the sides of the plastic ring under the boot together, and while holding them together, push the the back closest to the console forward. It should pop off. If you've got that far already, slowly peel the vinyl from the ring. I've read that the short shifter can be rough on the boots, unless you have a boot made specifically for the short shifter. See Jason @ Aplusperformance.com for one of those.

You need to take the console out and remove it from underneath.

Push away cause the tabs will break either removing it fromthe console or while you try to peel the old boot off the frame. As long as the frame stays intact, you can stretch another boot over it and secure it with some hot glue. I siliconed mine to the console and that was enough to keep it in place. The short shifter always rips the boot if you keep the reverse lockout. This is my second boot and a third will come in the spring.
