i have 96' 5 speed Z and was replacing the shifter cables but i can get the old ones out. Here are a couple pics, the round part is too big to go under the part of the dash, any ideas? thanks in advance guys

I believe that black piece is ducts for the heating/cooling vents. If you take a real close look, there are actually two pieces that fit together, one slides into the other. You have to take the bottom piece off, or 'slide it' up and over the piece its currently attached to. Hope that makes sense, I'm going off memory from whenI changed mine this summer. But I know that black piece can be moved out of the way or detached. I think there is one screw holding the two black pieces together, that'll need to come out so you can move the bottom half.

Just out of curiousity, why would you need to change the shifter cables?

I know I have to change mine due to the spring clamps at the tranny breaking off... (19 months on 1 zip-tie holding it in, and new ones in my closet -- w00t)

i need to change my shifter cables cause i lost 2nd 4th and Reverse cause the forward and backward cable broke throught the shealth and would not put foward it would just pop out of the shealth
