Please for the love of GOD
... j/k... how do I remove the silly airbag on my steering wheel.
12 steps to reducing the chances of walking away from a 30mph-70mph collision.
Sunfire..Steps
1st.. get in your car..
2nd.. get out of the car, and go around and sit in the drivers seat, silly..
2-1/2 step... if your stealing a car, get someone to keep six.. and hold the flashlight
3rd... look at the steering wheel
4th... put the key in the ign, and turn it to the "on" position..
5th... Little elbow grease here.. Turn the steering wheel straight (if its allready straight, go to step 6)
6th.. Turn the wheel to the right, or left, 90DEG..
7th.. The enclosure that covers your steering column.. (youll notice it has two halvs, the upper and the lower)
grab the top half of the enclosure by the holes (left is the turn signal, and headlights, right is the wiper control arm, they
dissapear into the centre enclosure through a hole, or port.. stick your index fingers (left and right) on either side of the enclosure)
and forcably lift up, seperating the two halfs.
8th.. Get a 10mm small socket w/ 4" extension and 1/4" ratchet.
9th.. With the steering wheel cocked at 90 degrees, feel around the back of the steering arm directly in front of you (thus assuming your sitting in
the car facing the steering wheel, cocked at 90deg you will find a divit in the plastic, stick the 10mm socket in the hole, and start loostening the
bolt.. (dont worry about losing it, it has a sping retainer which prevents it from falling or dropping out.
10th... Back it as far out as you want, and you will start seeing the airbag seperating from the steering wheel.
11th... Put the ratchet aside, and grab ahold of the wheel, and turn it 180degrees in the opposite direction you turned it initially (if you went 90deg
left, you want to go 180deg right, and vice-versa)
12th... With the steering arm in front you you place the socket in the divit, and repeat the 10th step.
tadaa... 12 steps to victory..
pull the pink thing ot of the coloumn (push and twist with your thumb and forfinger) and for the airbag connector, pull the green thing out, before you seperate the yellow connector (less likely to break it this way)
lol
That was fun, a little tounge-in-cheek, I don't mean to patronize anyone, or make anyone look like an idiot, I just wanted to take an approach from a point of view that everyone could understand..
take it easy..
dont i have to worry about the airbag deploying. Someone from autozone mentioned that I had to wait for a certain period a time.
buy a haynes or chiltons manual.. best $15 ive ever spent.. itll tell u how to do it..
Just pull the airbag fuse on the side of the dash, or for added security, disconnect the neg. battery terminal aswell.
disconnect the battery for like a half hour b4 you start. Have you started taking the wheel off yet. Once you unscrew the two bolts on the back of the wheel and the airbag falls off, you can easily see what to do from there.
I'd also get an airbag simulator. That will keep the passenger bag functional (unless that's also removed, in which case... )
just to add to what Coop wrote:
6.5 Remove the two or three torx head bolts holding the two halves of the steering column shroud, located underneath. Unscrew tilt lever if equiped.
sorry, to continue:
remove both halves of the shroud. Both airbag bolts are now accessible without having to move the wheel. No need to have the key on (to move the wheel), because, if you're like me, I tend to forget how long I have the key on or run to do something and forget, coming back to a dead battery. Just did it last weekend replacing power steering lines, in fact.
