Molded gauges....Pics???
Tuesday, September 05, 2006 10:38 PM
I'm trying to mold my volt meter gauge into my dash bezel. Right now, it is mounted where the 12V outlet was next to the steering wheel. It looks ok, but the dash has a curve to it and the gauge does not, so it kind of sticks out a tiny bit on top and bottom (no big deal to anyone else, but it drives me nuts). You can see where the gauge is if you look at my cardomain page.

On to the subject....

How did those of you that have done this do it? Does anyone have any start to finish pics of molding a single gauge---preferably in that spot? I can't seem to come up with a good way to make a template to mold in to the dash there. I remember seeing at least 3 posts a long time ago in photos and media where people showed how they did it, but I can not seem to find any of them

Thanks for your help in advance.

3 people come to mind

eazy
aliais (sp?)
blueice (broughtdowncustoms)

i know all 3 of them have had pics of molded gauges in the bezel. basic what you need is some type of tube, like pvc. take it and fit it to the bezel, then take cloth and attach it to the bezel and pvc tube. then take your fiberglass and go to work.

My bezel is like that, too. Jacob has done a couple of them. I'm sorry, tho, I don't have any start to finish pics of any of them.

You can also use a hole saw and cut the hole out the same size as the gauge and then just build the hole up w/fiberglass to make it flush with the lip of the gauge.

I started on this today and I think I have it going pretty well. I'll post pics when I decide if the idea I'm toying with will work or not.

Thanks for all the advice.

i'll keep you updated....

well, i have it almost finished now. There are a few spots that still need some glazing putty to even them out---but i didn't see them till i got it primed. Anyway, i'm going to try wetsanding the primer and see how that comes out.

Here are some pics of where it stands now. This is only my second try doing anything with fiberglass. All i did was take a small piece of exhaust pipe, glue it to the bezel, stretched fabric over which I resined, then used fiberglass body filler to even it out with the rest of the bezel. In the pic, there is one blob of primer (don't ask, it came out of the can like that), but no matter, it will be sanded anyway. On to the pics:

Fabric stretched and resined:

Primed (almost ready for paint):

thanks for the comments guys. I try to maintain some level of quality with these types of projects. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I can't just slap something together and call it good enough. I have to be satisfied with it myself before I'll let anyone else see it. It's nice to see that people notice and appreciate the work.

Thanks
