Okay so forgive me for many things a) this is my first post although I've been lingering around and watching for a while and b) if this was already mentioned somewheres else.
I bought this 99 cavy and it was in great condition. NON SMOKER owned it before me. I am a smoker and have put a burn spot in the ceiling covering. NOT my fault as someone almost T-Boned me and I had to do emergency manuevers (no excuse I know). I want to replace it. Point blank - the spot bothers me, not to mention my BF will crap his pants (he helped me get it and he doesn't know about the nearly damaging accident nor the lovely spot I left). I was wondering the technical name of this piece, where (if any) place I could get these. Also any installation tips would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks in advance - Heather
Sorry I dont have any mods done yet so no cool pics, and I havent named my car so I dont have a 'slogan' yet
Well, the piece is called a headliner. You could buy one out of a wrecked cavalier from your nearest junkyard for less than $20.
Or, you could start off modding your cav by recovering the headliner in a different material, like I and many others have.
Really? I didn't realize that they had it in different fabrics/materials... what do YOU have... I only ask because this is a new theory to me. I know about the seats, dash, doors and the like but never heard of anyone changing the headliner...
and if I were to replace it with a stock cavy liner (for the moment until I decide what I want to do) ... is installation easy or is it anything having to tear apart the whole rear end of the car to install different speakers (a gripe of mine... )
Thanks so much! - Heather
The headliner is not hard to replace. First thing is to remove the visors which have three torx (star bit) screws each. Then a flat head screwdriver to remove the back coat hanger thingies....you will see that there is a circle piece in the middle that pries out. Pull the dome light lense cover off to unclip the actual light from the headliner. Then all that's left is a few plastic clips around the edges. Slide it out towards the window, and then reverse these instructions for installation. And I got mine from a junkyard for around $20.
Okay to change colors of the headliner, I've used Vinyl and Fabric spray from an auto store. They are basic colors, but in my case I wanted Black, and cavy's don't have a true black headliner. So I just sprayed the black over the dark gray stock liner and it came out nice.
Another option is to find a totally different type of fabric, and use spray adhesive to tack it down. Make sure you get some good contact cement that is heat resistant or it won't take long to sag and fall. From my personal experience, DON'T take the stock fabric off....just go over it with the new fabric. The stock fabric on the liner is thick and gives the liner it's form. For a good bond with spray adhesive is you spray both surfaces and let the glue get "tacky". Then spray again and smooth out the fabric.
Ahhh this is long.......anyways hope this helps.

if you lived closer to me and your headliner was graphite, i'd give you my tannish/ natural colored headliner and visors for just your visors. and i'd install it all for ya.
