Junkyard Seats
Monday, March 29, 2010 7:06 AM
I was junkyward surfing on friday and i saw a couple of seats in cars that i wanted. Here is the problem! I saw some 4th firebird and camaro seats in decent condition and i know they are direct bolt in. Only problem is that they were SOAKED! Now would this be a issue if i got them. Like mold and mildew in the foam cculd they be cleaned and dried out to be decent still?

good question. id say if it was just one rain, and you got them dry'd out youd stand a good chance of being okay. but being a junkyard, how many times have they been rained on? that id be worried about.

You could get them, strip the fabric off, and take some mildew spray and a scrub brush to the foam. Maybe use one of those carpet cleaner things on the foam and fabric to suck anything out. Just a thought because JY seats are CHEAP!!!

Also get a carbon sheet and put it in between the upholstery and foam when you're done cleaning it to avoid future smell.

Another idea: Maybe you can strip them fully down and throw both the foam and the material in the washer, use color safe bleech, and then let them hang dry outside. That should take care of any mold issues. If I am wrong I am sorry, but just a thought!

if they have mold on them a quick rub down won't do the trick, they will need to be treated with speacial mold removal crap to get it gone. if not it will just come back and mold can make you sick so be careful whatever you do.

If all else fails, go get some new foam and some new fabric and reupholster them. I've been thinking of doing this with my seats since they both have a hole from the previous person before they went to the yard. Suede or leather seems good and I have seen places that sell colored vinyl in case you want to match your interior if it is custom. Just a thought.
