Simple install. all i did was tap into the wires behind the drivers side A pillar for the dome light and added a ground. this was out of a lumina i think?? i got it at the junk yard for $6 today.

your dome light fades out so only makes sense that the map lights would fade out. i also installed map lights from a vibe into my 96 cav.

yes you can turn the map lights on without the dome light on
i did this to myne last week
did this a year or so ago, didnt like having to turn the dome light on while driving for the passenger to look at dirrections and such. Didnt set it up so it fades with the dome light though no real point to it. simple on off function works well enough.
I've been wanting to do this myself..just lack the time and funds...currently lacking health as well.
