lowering seats...

Has anyone ever tried to lower the seats in a j-body before?

I am 6'1" and must have a long torso or something... because if i sit like a normal person my hair rubs on the headliner... it is annoying, and makes my hair look funny... so i just move the seat up and recline a bit.. so i look like im pimpin... but was just thinking that there has got to be a way to lower the seat a lil....

Having the back of the seat dropped down an inch or 2 would be more comfy, and give me more headroom, not to mention making it feel more sporty (to me at least) i used to drive a 1980 vette... and i loved how it felt like your arse was almost on the pavement.

I think that if you design something to lower the seat as you would like you would lose the sliding option of the seats.

So with that in mind, it can be done, just design your own bracket, and with some time and thought you may be able to design a sliding system.

use a set of f-body seats they drop right in and sit lower.

or

cut the back legs of the seat bracket off and weld them up higher if you even can, I don't recall off the top of my head.

im 6'2 and have coilovers on shot kybs. so of course i was smacking the crap out of my head, as im not comfortable gangsta leaning. i completely removed the sliding mechanism. removed the floor mounts from the bottom of the sliding assembly. i welded the front floor mounts directly on over the bolt holes the sliding assembly used to mount with, then made four mounting extension.(my knees hit the dash with out them) 4in x 2 1/2in x 1/4 in thick. drilled holes in one end and welded the other end to the bottom of the floor mount. same for the back, but i put a 1/2in spacer between the floor mount and seat where the sliding assembly mount holes were to give needed clearence for a racheting wrench to tighten the rear nuts as they are now under the seat. i can go take some pics if you need, just ask. i used 1/4in thick hardened steel and a 200amp flux core mig welder.....just a thought if you dont wanna do this your self i can make you a set of floor mounts with extensions, for $20 all youll have to do is remove your sliding assembly, bolt the new mounts on the bottom of the seat where the old assembly mounted(extensions facing foward), then get someone to throw a couple tack welds on each one for that extra piece of mind.

damn no edit button. it dropped my seat a total of 4in in the rear and 5 1/2in in the front. gave me plenty of head and leg room, much more comfortable. plus i look like a little guy when im driving it now...till i get out and the roof of the car just comes to my belly button.

I was gonna say, why do that in the talon? those seats are low enough already.

but then i looked at your profile and say you have a jbody too lol..

yeah i love how my talon is layed out, tons of room. one of the other reasons behind lowering the seats in the cav besides the worry of concusions, is body roll....not the cars, my fat ass's. after i modded my suspension i noticed that i flew around in the seat of the cav like crazy when in turns, as it could handle corners a lot sharper, with more persision and absolutely no body roll. by lowering the seat, not only did i create head and leg room. it lowered and redistrubted my weight in the vehicle resulting in a change of the vehicles the center of gravity(putting 220lbs 6inches lower and 4inches farther back, makes a huge difference), making my body less prone to weight throw during acceleration and cornering.

you are all smoking crack.... I went to the junk yard again.... this time looking for F-body seat brackets....

these are all the exact same brackets. the older J's the F's and the new J's they all look almost identicle... where are you guys coming up with this stuff?

the difference is in the seats themself... the brackets are all the same... my 02 has a big thick bottom cusion... the gen2 j's and the fbodys have a bottom cusion resembling a folding chair....

But if you are keeping your seats, and just swapping brackets, dont waste your time on older j's and f's..

I am just going to have to get to chopping mine up and getting a lil more room.

Yea never said the brackets themselves. They are almost identical to j's but f-body seats are just more low slung.

oh.... well, yeah... I guess i should have been more specific.... I rather like my seats now.... just need them a lil lower...

I know someone else told me that the older J-brackets are much lower... led me to believe that i could drop inches by just changing brackets.

but that wasnt the case at all.... so i guess that is still what i was thinking when you mentioned the f-body's. which i found to be the same situation... same brackets, different bottom cushion.

oh well...

I think i am going to oval out the holes, and move my brackets foreward, and then slide the seats further back... (may need to redrill and mount them further back on the sliders) but if you notice the sliders angle back... so the further back you go the lower you get... but then you cant reach anything... so moving the brackets up, and the seats back... would essentially lower the mounting point of the seats... and i may shave down the rear mounts while i am at it... get me nice and low...
