i have a 2000 cavalier with the stock steel rim with hub caps. what is the widest and low profile tire i can get?
you cant get the profile of the tire lower without getting a larger rim. you need the added diameter of the rim to eat up the sidewall of the tire to go with a lower profile rubber.
as for how wide you can go, would be nice to know what you have on there. cavs and fires came with both 14" and 15" steel rims.

It is the 15 inch steel rim.
i believe 225/55R15 is the largest you can do, but finding that tire size is very difficult. it was only every really made for mid-90's BMWs. as far as i know, Michelin is one of the few who make it, and they arent cheap.
i used to run 205/60R15's on mine though. they are a little wider than stock and still fit nicely with keeping the overall diameter close to OE.
