My manager wants to trade wheels with me. He's offering four 17" Kyowa Racing 228s for my TSW VX1s(Which are very scratched up from my car's previous owner getting intimate with the curbs) I like his rims alot better but they have a bad history. One of the rims is bent and un-usable. I'll have to get a replacement. another of the rims has a hairline crack. He bought them like that and said the man who had them before him hit some kind of pothole and ran off the road and that the damaged rims were on the same side and the other two don't have any damage whatsoever. I plan to, if I decide to trade, get the cracked rim aluminum welded from the inside and buy a replacement. He said he's got a contact for tires and can probably get all four for around $200 Can anyone give me some Idea about the safety of this one wheel after it's welded, and their opinion on the whole situation. He said he's ran the two good rims on his Acura for a while so I was thinking they'd have to be good. I'm gonna talk to him next time I see him about getting some cash for my rims too since I'll be giving him 4 good wheels and he'll be giving me two good ones and a cracked one. I think I've covered all of the situation. Please tell me what you think and, maybe a good site for getting the replacement wheel cheep. Thanks
please, Someone help me I think I may take the cracked wheel to a wheel place and a welding place to see what they think about the strength of the cracked rim after I weld it
Personally, I wouldn't do it. Do what I did, save up for the rims you want, don't think of what you can do now. Having four good wheels is a lot less headache and stress than trying to find a replacement rim and worrying if the weld on a cracked one is going to hold up. If nothing else, you could look at pricing to have your current rims refinished.
Basically, it's your call and there's a decent chance the whole deal would work out. But there are big ifs on your end of the deal. What if you can't find a replacement rim cheap? What if the $200 set of tires falls through? What if the aluminum weld doesn't hold up?
That's a lot of risk just for a better look...
IMO you should never trade for something bad, even if you're doing a bad <-> bad trade in return. just stick w/ what you got and work off that, whether you sell them or something and later get brand new shiny ones.
