i have a 99 sunfire gt with 3 spoke rims. i would like to paint them black or white havent decided. can someone tell me how i could do this. i saw the spray cans of rim paint. you think i can paint them leaving the tires on them?
You can. Just mask off the tires with newspaper and tape.
You'll want to buy rim paint and clear coat for em...if you have the time, Id also sand down the rims before hand for the smoothest possible surface...
Hey buddy, i just signed up here at JBody.org because i wanted to help ya with yer questions bout rim painting. I actually did it myself. You can check out my webpage for some pics if you wish, they are gun-metal. Heres how we did them (quick way):
1. Sand down with 120 or 180 grit to get most of the finish off
2. Sand again with 400 or 600 grit for smoothness
3. Two coats of primer
4. Two coats of paint.
And then clearcoat if you wish. But i didnt.
As per the tires, i left mine on but covered them in a tire finish gel (Simoniz Midnight Gel) so that i would have as little paint as possible sticking to them. Afterwards, i just took a power washer and sprayed most of the paint off. It will flake off with normal driving, but if you are impatient you can spray most of it off. Or simply mask it off... its up to you.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!
