Studded tires?

Have any of you guys used studded tires before? I'm planning on getting some BF Goodrich Winter Slalom tires right away. You can also stud these tires for better ice traction.

Does anyone know if you can stud just your front tires in a fwd application, or if you should do all four? Also what is it like on dry pavement?

Thanks.

I used a pair of studded tires on the front of a FWD car. Great in winter. Braking was like stopping on gravel. Around corners the rear liked to slide out, unless you were careful. On dry pavement they like to "skate" or float around. Noisy also.

If you do get studs, make sure they are high quality ones, and not ones that are 1000 for $1. That is where I made a mistake. Wore out quickly. Flew out of the stud holes. I went back to the tire dealer and complained. They replaced them with some siped tires, which might be another option to look at.

If you're going to do it, you should do all four. You're not going to do yourself any favours by introducing entirely unpredictable handling just because you want to stop better in a straight line.

And check the laws where you live. In most cities and stuff they're illegal.
