anybody ever tried putting a bigger size tire on the donut? i THINK that the wheel is a 14x4, and it comes w/ a 125/70 tire. I was looking to see if i could squeeze a 175/70 on there.....and of course still fit it in the stock donut location.

It would be very iffy.. I have never heard of it being done. I really don't know how safe it would hold up. Only a 175 70 14 but thats quite large for that little spare rim. And I don't know if anyone would mount that for you?
If your looking to go with a bigger spare, you could always just get a 14 inch steel wheel (as long as you don't have big brake upgrades or something like that) from a z22 or something 14 inch 5x100... and put a 175 on there. Before you do that check the hieght and size of the spare tire well, make sure everything fits in ok.... That would be a better option I would think. I did it with my Hyundai, I used a steel wheel and tire and got rid of the donut. Now I have a full size spare.... and it fits great.

If your going to go with a 14" steel wheel in there you want a 195/70/14 tire, definately not a 175.

^^ Bigger diameter on the 195 70 14 wheel... which will give you more ground clearance and isn't that what your goin for wanting to switch up the spare donut with a fullsize?

Thats true, but if your talking about mounting a 175 tire on a stock 14x6 wheel, thats not good...

Ok, first off... at least consider the idea of a full sized spare. It doesn't fit under the stock flat cover but it does fit down in the wheel well. I have that blue moving pad laying over mine and still use my trunk for everyday stuff. There's lots of room.
Now if you really want to get a taller tire without getting one that doesn't fit under the stock cover, I don't think you'll be able to do it with the stock 14" wheel. Your original question about the 175/70 tire fitting where a 125/70 tire was is moot. There's just no way the 175 will safely fit that wheel. It's too wide.
What you should be looking into is a low profile spare from some performance car that needs the taller tire for ground clearance. Corvettes used them before they went to run-flat tires. I think they're 17" wheels but very narrow, like our compact spares.
Any machine shop should be able to drill a 5x100 pattern into it for you to be able to use it on the Cav and it may very well fit under the stock cover in the trunk.
Check the wreckers to see if you can test fit one before buying it and to ensure that there is space for the 5x100 bolt pattern to be drilled.
here's the problem guys.
every so often, i have to go on long 700 mile trips. the speed limit on the highway is 70. the average speed of people going in the right SLOW lane is 70-75.
A) i cannot afford to go 55 mph or less, about 20 mph below the flow of traffic because i do not feel safe going that slow. people are idiots and wont notice that you are impaired, regardless of hazard lights or not. I also do not want to stop in the middle of hicktown usa to have a guy TRY to figure out how to repair my flat tire, seeing as the spare only lasts 50 miles.
B) after doing some calculations, i figure that with my drop, i will be about 2-3" from the ground with the donut on. any slight bump, and i will lay the body on the freaking ground.
So, finding a "larger" spare is no problem. I've found a 16" wheel with 155/70, which should be no problem. But again, the problem of the 55 mph max is what worries me.
C) The tire MUST fit under the stock carpet for quite a few reasons, period.
Maybe i'll find a 16x5 wheel and find the slimmest tire possible. I need to be able to safely drive the car at 70 mph for a long long time and be able to fit the spare in the compact location.
So...any other ideas? And ps - i dont like those fix a flat things, i dont like the idea of sticking rubber gooey @!#$ in my tire and having it spin around the inside to "seal" the tire. That, and it wont last the long trip anyway.

I honestly don't think you're going to find anything narrow enough to fit under the stock cover but that can handle those highway speeds.
I'm quite interested in how this turns out though.

Because even if you put a 175 width tire onto a 14x6 wheel, its still 6 inches wide......
As for fix a flat, it depends on your leak. And you're basically implying that if the tire blows at mile 50, that you're going to travel another 650 miles on a "modified" spare tire setup. Personally, I'd take the hour or two out of my trip to get a new tire, or my punctured one repaired if it can be. Apparantly, they don't have Walmarts and Kosts and such in your 700 mile stretch? I'm not saying it can't be made to fit. But I think you'd be better off with a stock 14" tire, and deal with a little hump in the trunk. Keep in mind, that anytime you drive with a wheel that is a different height, it's going to affect your suspension and handling, and all that. I think that's part of why they don't recommend you travel more than 50 miles on a donut. (though there are people here who drive on them for weeks on end).
im interested in this too because with my current setup i cant fit a full size spare in my trunk due to my subs being back there
