I have a 2000 cavalier with a 2.2l and a 3 speed auto. The car has 200,000 miles on it. To my knowledge the trans fluid or filter have never been touched. My question is this: with this many miles on it should I just get the filter changed and fluid topped off or should the trans be flushed? Some people have told me to do a flush and some people have told me to just do the filter and top off the fluid. I just want to make the trans last as long as possible. This car is my work commuter and it is my family's only car. Also, how long do these 3 speed autos normally go for? Can a 4 speed auto be swapped in when this one goes? If so, how much work would it be and what would I need? Would the 4 speed give me better freeway fuel mileage? I want a 5 speed but that sound like it would take a lot of work, time, and money that I dont have.
i would change both the filter and do a flush.
