No park

Hi,

I have a 1994 Sunbird with the 2.0 and auto trans. I got in it today to leave and it dropped into reverse like normal and then locked up the front wheels like I slammed it into park. Then I put it into drive and ease on the gas and it CLUNKS into drive, go a short distance, then it locks up the wheels as if I slammed it into park. Long story short, after working it back and forth through the shifter a few times, we got it to go into reverse, neutral, and drive, however now there is no Park. Any suggestions? Car has 107k, fluid is clean, no burnt smells or leaks, just purchased it from the City Of Houston a few weeks back.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

I'm not sure too how automatics work, but have you checked under the center console exposing the whole shifter assembly? Just gonna guess and say something there is broken and not the actual transmission since it did lock up on you so that does mean it was in park and you said you had all the gears working by playing with the shifter. That clunk sound was probably a little neutral drop, not a big deal if it happened once, I wouldn't let it happen all the time. If I'm wrong I'm sorry, at least this will bump it up for someone else to help.
