I was on the highway today coming up to my offramp so i press in the clutch and pull the shifter into neutral (00 z24 5-speed) to just coast to the end of it. I get down to the end of the off ramp and go to put it in gear and nothing! The cables and linkages etc anything you can see outside of the tranny are all hooked up and working fine but theres no feeling to the shifter and there are no noises coming from the tranny when you try to shift. It doesnt go into ANY gear and instead of the "H" shift pattern i can actually make the shifter do a full circle. It feels as if everything is neutral. Im not sure how else to explain the situation? No noises, no clunks, took it out of gear fine but now theres like no gears, cant get it into any gear; the stick will go to the position where it should be IN a gear but theres nothing there. I dont understand what happened or why? I need a fix ASAP though so if anyone can offer some insight on whats wrong and/or suggestions for a fix, Im all ears
thanks.

Sounds like the shifter cables came disconnected from the shifter. Take the center console out and look. Also there is a lever you can grab on the tranny and put the car in gear, see if you can. See if the car will move after doing it by hand. This will tell you if the issue is in the cable/shifter, or tranny.

Yeah, I did all that. Right on the side of the road lol Cop pulled up and thought I was crazy. But its definitely something inside. Ive searched through every post I could find on here and looked through a lot of the posted pictures too. I was just hoping someone would have had a similar experience and could kind of pinpoint it before I drop the tranny out of the car... Its not the shifter, the cable, or the little lever things on the outside of the tranny; Ive checked all of those and it top notch. When you move the levers on the outside there its like there is nothing being moved inside the tranny. No clicking, doesnt sound like anything is touching anything inside. I dont know too much about transmissions (yet...) Any other ideas?? Thanks a lot BTW.

Truly it would be odd that every shift fork in the tranny broke at once. 1 and 2 share a shift fork, 3 and 4 share one and 5 and reverse share one. Maybe the main shaft that goes down in the tranny is no longer making contact with the shift forks. I think I remember taetschz24 had a issue with his were a pin on the top of the tranny broke. He might be able to give more info on this.

Let me get the situation right.....you are SURE
ALL of your cables are connected at
ALL locations, but you have
absolutely NO gears??
Yet everything externally looks good?
When you try to engage a gear AT THE TRANS, there is no noise or feeling of anything productive??
Are you sure the area the shift cables connect to is not broken in some way? I would take a second/third look there, and then try to remove that piece while it is still in the car. There is an exploded view of the getrag floating around here, and I have a copy saved on my computer if you need it. That should help you get that piece out to see what broke. If I remember correctly, there is a roll pin in there too.
There is a casing around the shift cables to protect them from the elements. If you break one they will look completely normal about 90% of the time. Been there, it sucks but they're not hard at all to change.
Thanks a lot guys I got it. It was just like John Higgins mentioned, The pin at the top of the shaft going into the tranny sheared into 3 pcs giving the appearance that everything outside was working fine it just wasnt moving the shaft at all.
