3t40 Jerks

Recently whenever I hit a decent sized bump in the road, my transmission jerks for a 1/4 mile or so and then is fine. Also on occasion I will get a hard 3rd to 2nd down shift, Fluid level is good. Also just swapped motor from 89 2.8 to 93 3.1, original 89 transmission.

Those are actually common problems with the TH125C/3T40s. The Superior Shift Correction kit will help out your problem. While you installing the kit, if you haven't already done so, change the fluid and filter. Don't use sythetic fluid, it slipped too much in mine. I use B&M's Original TrickShift and it firmed up the shifting.

I can install that with the trans still in the car right? Is a rebuild necessary?

Actually most of the kit is done in the valve body, which is located under the stamp steel valve body cover on the drivers side pan. On the 3rd gens, you van remove the plastic dust sheilds in the wheel well and remove the trans mount and access it through the wheel well. I'm not sure about the 2nd gens accessibility. You will also need to get to the governor and the servo. See the exploded diagram for details.
