My car is reaching more then 200k miles on it and im in the process in replacing the clutch cause after that many miles its starting to slip a little, just i got one question. How difficult would it be removing the engine or do i have to remove the engine with the trans entact? this is my first time doing this well not my first but a first with a manual transmission. any suggestions is appreciated thanks!
Uh, so i can replace the clutch or do i have to remove the trans with it? and would be a good opportunity to replace the timing chain while the engine is out also cause it has a @!#$ load of miles on her!
Waterpump, timing chain are good things to replace at high milage, but, you need only to drop the part of the sub frame for the tranny to unbolt and wiggle out. No need to pull the whole engine.
I'm assuming you have a 2.4 if you are concerned about the timing chain, but let me say, if you've never been deep inside an engine and feel comfortable doing that kind of stuff, replacing the chain is NOT something you want to do. If you get the timing wrong, you've just destroyed your motor. Timing chains last a LONG time and I'm almost willing to bet that when/if you take it apart, you'll find the guides and chain are in like-new condition. Water pump is not an easy job, thats why shops typically charge $400-$600 to replace it on the 2.4.
You don't have to remove the engine at all to replace the clutch, just the transmission like Mark said. You might want to get some experienced help. I'm not trying to put you down, but from you saying that you have to remove the engine to do the clutch I'd like to see you get it right. If you don't align the clutch properly or you get any kind of contaminates on the clutch surface, or if you don't resurface the flywheel, then you just did the whole clutch job for nothing.
