1993 Cavalier
2.2 Auto (3 speed)
The speedometer broke and the car when put in drive will not shift out of first gear.
I went to autozone requesting a variable speed sensor and they sold me something that looks pretty similar to a thermostat housing without the outlet.
I put it on.. it did not help. They called this a transmission speed sensor but assured me it was the same thing.
This was on the passenger side rear of the transmission on top of the transmission. Is that the VSS? or do I need to go to a dealer or something to find a VSS? And where would it be located?
Any help is appreciated. It would seem that from my searching the problem is deninitely the VSS but I dont think thats the part that autozone gave me. Hoping to get an answer by tomorrow morning so I can make it to the dealer while theyre open if the item is a dealer only thing. Thanks alot.
These 2 problems are not related.
A "variable speed sensor?" what exactly is that? I think you want the "vehicle speed sensor". Might wanna check the dealership. But I could have sworn the AutoZone has VSS's there.
As far as the transmission not shifting, that's a completely different problem. It's not an electronic tranny, so it won't use the input from the VSS to decide when to shift.
So youre saying its just a coincidence that they both broke at the exact same moment? Do these transmission have a seperate computer besides the ecu?
The trans has no electronic computer.
But the problem could still be related.
The speedo not working won't cause the trans not to shift, but the trans not shifting could cause the speedo not to work.
If I remember right, the speedo is piggy backed onto the governor.
The governor decides when to shift.
It has a plastic drive gear that probably stripped off. If it doesn't spin it doesn't shift, and the VSS doesn't spin either.

Mind telling me where the governer is? maybe do you have a pic?
underneath the cover that the speed sensor bolts to.
near the right axle on top of the trans.
get a service manual, its all in there.
