I just got my 96 cavalier 4 months ago and it is a 5 speed. i was shifting into 2nd real hard and it grinded a little and i didnt pay attention to it and i shifted it into 3rd. After that i lost all gears. I drove home and let it sit for a wile. I got back in and i had 1st 3rd 4th and 5th. So I drove it and lost 4th and only had 1st 3rd and 5th. Can anyone tell me whats going on?
I've heard it's the cables and I heard its the selector in the trans and I've heard some pin or bolt is broke.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
a friend of mine had this problem with his 00...if he shifted too hard he would lose gears. it stretched his trans linkage cable to where it wouldnt let him go into gears the same way you have...if he shifted too hard going into 4th...he would lost 2, 4, and reverse and if he shifted too hard into 3rd he would lose 1,3, 5. i would say that would be your best bet.
Thanks it's a start. i just don't want to have to take it somewhere and have them tell me that it was something easy to do and i pay out the ass for labor and parts.
yeah...he sold the car right after it started happening(thats not why he sold it though) and the person that bought it didnt know anything about cars and even though he told them thats what it was they still went somewhere and had a shop look at it and they said it was first the clutch and then somethin else expensive so they had both of those put on and it changed nothing. those shops will lie about that @!#$ so definately check the linkage first...its not that much

The clip on the bottom end of the shifter was popping from its proper position on the cable end, happens to me once in a while.
Being that it is a isuzu it is the shifter cables. I had this happen on my 97 Z. Never heard of this on a getrag tranny.

See I'm not sure if it is a isuzu or the getrag? is there a way to tell whitch one is witch. I've been driving with 1st 3rd and 5th for a wile now like a month and a half. the only place I found to get cables was at a dealership. I went to auto zone advanced and others and it was not avaliable.
oops

If it's a 96, chances are it's an Isuzu.
I have a set of Isuzu cables I'd be willing to sell you. I bought them new from GMPartsdirect.com and put them on for all of 15,000 miles.
When I went to the dealership for both cables it was going to be 150 $
Paypal me $40 and I'll ship them tonight.
Hell, your profile says you are in IL. I'll be in Schaumburg next week. I can bring them with me if you'd like and you can pick them up Tuesday night.
its the cables , same thing happened to me lost 2,4,r and the cables were screwed
x7 on the cables. sometimes, if you miss a shift, your cable will become bent at the end. look at the shift cable on the transmission, if it exits the sheath, and bends at all, thats def the problem. you can reach down there with a pair of plyers and bend it back straight. its no big deal.

well guys thanks for the help. I haven't fixed the problem yet. Hey muffin if you still have those cables i most likely will buy them. If I wasn't so busy I would have went and got them on tues. but I had school and didn't have any extra time. Sorry
Having the same problem....How do you get to the cables to check/replace them if they are bad?
i took out my center console and they just snap in place on the shifter and the trans, there is a grommet in the fire wall they run thru and just pull them through and replace, not hard to do at all, had to replace them on both my 98 and my 00 Z's
OK, on my way home from work tonite, I shifted into 2nd and stepped on the gas, and just hit the rev limiter a couple of times, no grinding, no nothing. the same thing (w/o hitting the rev limiter) in 4th and rev. it is also very difficult to shift between 1,3,and 5, so I drove most of the distance between work and home in 3rd gear (not too wonderful for the clutch)
I just went out and checked the shift cables, but they appear to be ok, at least on the transmission side. however, the pin that the cables connect to appears to have popped out of the trans. about 1/4 of an inch. is there some way I can fix this without tearing the whole damn thing apart? I'd like to swap to a getrag, but I have no money right now.
Please help me.
it's a '99 Z, BTW (yeah, an Isuzu, I know)
LD9 F23 FTW!!
nobody knows? ^^^ the "pin" is the shift selector, I think ( I don't know all the fancy names for the parts of a manual yet, but it's the part that moves the shift forks)

How about having 2nd 3rd 4th, won;t go into 1st, goes into 5th but doesn't click to engage. Then reverese was lost and regained for 1 shift (and now clicks into reverse but lights don;t come on). I haven't actually tried to back up because there was another car behind me at the time when I regained reverse for 1 shift.
still sounds like the cables are binding up IMO
