Hey all. I recently bought an '02 cavalier with 73k miles on it. It doesnt have much of a clutch left, and its starting to smell, so Im going to replace it very soon (babying the car untill I get my next check)
Im stuck on what to get. Im debating on getting an OEM clutch, or a Spec Stage2. Or stage 3? (Im thinking the stage 3 would be a bit rough for my car)
I have a 2200 with all the bolt ons, and Im installing a pnp head which is shaved a little in a few days. I dont really ever go to the track, I drive a bit harsh at times. The car gets beat on a bit. I *might* boost the car, Itll see a max of lets say 225 whp.
I know I dont need to get a clutch capable of handling a million ft/lbs or anything. But I want something that can handle some heavy driving and have a good life.
Im leaning towards the stage 2, but If I can get about the same driveability from a stage 3 and the 3 will have more life id rather get that. Im sure the 3 is overkillx2 though. (thought Id throw it in for opinions)
Im also going to get a lightened flywheel as well sometime down the road. Id love to do both at the same time, but the clutch needs attention right now and money doesnt permit both. I know the flywheel makes a difference in what clutch to get, so im mentioning it as well.
any help you can give I appreciate! thanks!
im sure youll hear go with the spec + series..phil
I've got the Spec Stage II kevlar clutch on mine. It grabs hard and the pedal feel is lighter than stock. I've had mine for 10K miles and I'm very happy with it.

Perhaps get the Spec 2+ clutch, similar feel to the Spec 2, but grabs better. Should be able to handle some boost.
I think the SPEC Stage 2 + is a good choice as stated above

imo I am running a spec 3 with an aluminum flywheel, and TGLSD. You can ask anybody who knows me, and they will all tell you that I beat the livin hell out of my j. The pettle feel is as soft as stock but the clutch grabs almost instantly. It took me a day or two but I got used to it fast and I like the way it drives. I have almost every bolt on, and plan on boosting it one day, I chose the 3 because even if I only make 250 turbocharged when im at the track on slicks I dont want it to slip one bit.
I would strongly recommend going with an exedy clutch. I run exedy cluthes in all of my jbodys. My buddy jon just bought an exedy clutch for his ecotec from Never Enough Auto for a very reasonable price.
im looking at the stage 2+ clutch right now, and it seems like im going to go that route. Nice long life and a hard grab when you need it.
Im going to build a monster n/a 2200 sometime in the future (starting very soon as my motor is making a noise I dont like) and then maybe boost that... itll be a long time before any boost now. I might consider a nitrous setup. Overall, Im not 100% on what im going to do with the motor right now, Id like to be above maybe 180 at the wheels.
As soon as my check gets in the bank, im going to dive into the 2+
Anyone have any idea how long ive got? The car smells like hot glue when i drive it, and the clutch grabs way up to, and not all that hard at all. I baby the hell out of it and barely get above 45 on the 5 mile hike to work, because I dont want to need to get the clutch just to have the car running.
thanks for the tips!
