woah! I hope james hasn't put ATF in his 5-speed and driven it much. correct me if I'm wrong (w/o being a jacka$$, please do so), but ATF in a manual usually causes really bad things to happen (new tranny, anyone?). IDK about the getrag trannys, but the isuzus use sychromesh fluid, and most manuals use gear oil (75w150, 80w90, etc.). I've never heard of any MANUAL transmission that used AUTOMATIC transmission fluid. ATF is a much thinner fluid (so it doesn't stick to the gears as well), besides having different addatives for use with the wet-disk cluch packs used in automatic transmissions.

Syncromesh ONLY for the Isuzu and Old School Getrags
ATF ONLY for the F23 Getrags

thats it now ifs ands or buts those are the only fluids that work with the transmissions.

Actually, just about every manual trans manufactured in the last 10-15yrs uses ATF (or similar) for fluid. Many transes have used ATF for over 20yrs. Gear oil is for dinosaurs

Also for those arguing Syncrhomesh vs. ATF....
example- {quote]

Both are very similar. Using either in any J trans will not harm a thing.
Synchromesh has added friction modifiers that aid in synchronizer function.

GM actually recommends either for any J trans depending on when you asked them.
Isuzus came with synchromesh but service recommendations in the field said ATF was usable.
Getrags came with ATF but service recommendations to repair a clattering noise said to use Synchromesh.
