how do you tell the diff in these two trans if you havent had the car out for a drive say. is there any way to tell by the pan? im not sure if it is the stock trans either.

^ That's probably the easiest way to tell
count the number of pan bolts, and look at the pan shape the 4t40 E has 12 bolts in the pan while the 3t40E has 16 pan bolts

looking at the shifter isn't spelled out enough? you have to crawl under a car to count bolts as opposed to standing outside a car and seeing if it says prnd321 or prnd21? thats pretty spelled out if you ask me.

they are easily distingished by the pan shabe and bolts the 3t40E has 16 bolts, and the 4T40E has 12 bolts.
