Long Time For Drive engage

I've had an 88 Z24 and I just got an 89 Z24. On both cars, when the Trans is cold it takes a really long time to shift into gear. Once it is in gear and I've been driving I can put it park and then it will go right into drive. Doesn't happen in hot weather and not as bad in warm weather. I think it could be the hydraulic pump and some one told me it was old gaskets in the valve bodies. Any one have an idea or had this same problem.

It was done right before I bought the car. when a filter/fluid change didn't help the old man sold it and I got a really good deal on it. I was eventually going to remove the trans from the 88, rebuild it, and put it in the 89, but I was just hoping for a cheaper easier solution. I don't know the service history other than that.

This is usually due to much trans fluid leaking, back into the torque convertor.

Then when the car is started in the morning, the pump is operating and putting fluid back into the transmission.

There is a seal on the input shaft that when it leaks, it causes this to happen.
