new clutch wont budge

ok i just put a new clutch in my 89 Beretta, 2.8, 5 speed.
the trani went back in no problem but now i cant get any gears.
i checked my slave and master, went as far as replacing them too(almost as much hassle as the clutch!)
still wont engage
i got a trani from a friend that came out of a rear end wreck 140-150,000 km on it, so i swapped trani's, still exact same outcome.
i had this exact same problem with a-z24 last summer with the same results, at that time i chalked it up to synchros and i could not justify paying out more for the parts than it was worth
what am i doing wrong? and have i sent a perfectly good car to a premature death

i have been told (sources unconfirmed) that when removing the c.v's that some models you must leave one c.v. in place to hold some "pin" in place and if one does not do this the "pin" will fall into the trani
can anyone elaborate on this as well as possible suspect?
