New Idea for 4T40E Mounts!
Tuesday, August 15, 2006 2:55 PM
I was just reading an article in Sport Compact Car magazine about their RSX project car. In the article they chose to fill the motor mounts with urethane instead of buying aftermarket mounts. I've heard of people doing this before but i never knew what kind of urethane to use or where to get it for that matter, i've even made posts here on JBO (years ago) to search for the answers with no results.

In the article they say to use 3M #8609 Urethane Window Adhesive.
"Thoroughly clean the mounts to be filled, then build a masking tape dam on one side. Fill with urethane from the bottom up and leave sitting out in the sun for a few days to fully cure"

I plan to try this out on my 4T40E trans mounts some time soon, any thoughts???

Windshield urethane is pretty stiff. It could be a good idea.

Also in the article it says "This trick comes from Road Race Engineering, and was ralley-tested before being passed on". Sounds like its been put to the test.

wow old news. nothing against you but this trick has been around for awhile. im suprised its not in the faq.

3m window weld. its been used for quite some time. another trick is to take like a plastic cutting board and cut chunks and shove them in the gaps. then fill the rest with urethane. this is to get an even stiffer mount if that is what you wish.

Please post pics and results when your done.

I have never heard of 3M window weld used, but I have heard of other 3M Urethane used. We did it to my friends neons motor mounts. Long time ago.

Sounds like a good idea. Please keep us informed of how it works out. I have never heard of this done, but have heard of people putting wood and other objects in the mounts (all manual mounts) over the years.

some of the BCJ 2nd gen guys did this same thing to motor mounts as no one built a 2nd gen V6 mount. i'll ask how it worked and what they did and used.

well drilling and putting 2 bolts through the mount would be a little more effective

if youve ever looked at the mount , its a big rubber biscuit and there is hole in the center that attaches the outter and inner

so pretty much with the mount out of the car you can spin it 360 degrees

there is a little room to fill it , but i can not say how effective it would be

Im already getting this done to my Auto tranny mount when I get my custom turbo kit put on.. I don't know exactly how the shop is gonna do it, but he just told me to bring him a spare mount and he will make it solid for me.. Maybe he'll be going the window adhesive way, not sure.. Ill have to watch him make one and take pictures.

Like said, not sure how affective it will be though.

Plus you don't have to leave them in the sun for 5 days. I put one in the front, still gotta put the rear in, but I'll do that when I put my new clutch and flywheele in.

Yes it's a very old trick and alot of people have done it.

http://importnut.net/motormount.htm

Having experimented with it myself I'd rather pay the $50 and get a decent urathane mount.

Has anyone tried this or are you guys all trying to hold out for the ttr mounts? I am getting impatient and might end up doing this if ttr doesnt pull through soon.
