is the auto or 5-speed faster. And if a Z24 is auto and a 2200 is 5-speed which would you buy
i had my ass handed to me!
i'm running a 3spd auto (with engine bolt on's & full exhuast) and the other car was a bone stock 5spd.

A auto Z24 will rape a 5 speed 2200 every time.

depending what has been done to the 2200, and if the z24 is stock or not!

Obviously.

My 5 spd 2.2 (with a few bolt ons) seems to keep up and pulls away slightly from a 2200 w/ 4spd auto w/ the same types of bolt-on mods.
that's a tough question to answer. some will say the auto some will say the 5spd. the auto is failsafe for consistent times but the 5spd is a bit more precise for shifting. HOWEVER........if one is not competant with launching or shifting a 5spd, an auto will more then likely beat a similarly modded 5spd.

Exactly. The manual should beat the automatic provided the manual driver knows what he is doing. But even the best can miss a shift now and then, especially under pressure......
Where are you guys getting this stuff from. I have personally witnessed probably 1000 j bodies drag racing on real race tracks. The typical auto Z24 will run anywhere from 16.5 - 15.5 ET's at best depending on the track, the typical 2.2OHV 5 speed with run .5 - 1 second slower. I've also seen plenty of J's on the dyno as well. The typical auto Z will put down 120 -130 whp stock, the 2.2OHV's i've seen put down roughly 90whp.
This does not mean a stock auto Z won't get beat by a modded 5 speed OHV, but with similar mods on both cars the Z should be a easy win.

I wasn't thinking Z versus 2.2. I was just thinking identical cars except auto versus 5-spd. But your right, that wasn't exactly the original question, was it?

The way i read the original question is that the guy wants to know which is faster, a auto Z or a 5 speed 2200?

Well, his first sentence is, "is an auto or 5 spd faster?", without mentioning the car. He follows by questioning whether he should buy an auto Z or 5 spd 2200. Whatever.....
then if all he wants to know is if he should buy a auto Z or a 5 speed 2200, id say the auto Z, consistant, already have a decent engine to start with and plus the automatic 4t40e isnt so bad i mean skilz is putting down around 300whp on his auto with no probs and im pushing alittle over 250whp with no problems so to not miss any gears id pick the auto Z.
I dont know.... i think a 5 speed is just more exciteing/challenging to drive, I have an old 93' 2.2 auto and after driving a stick for almost 2 years now when i have to drive the auto its just boring.
but as for which is faster, Fast is all about the same thing $$$$$$$, but to me in a 1/4 mile a stock 2.2 5 speed will always beat a stock 2.2 auto, and a stock 5 speed 2.4 will always beat a stock 2.4 auto. (exluding driver error, which is what makes the 5 speed challenging) but all of that dosn't really mean a thing if your not staying stock.
