Shifter won't shift
Friday, June 02, 2006 1:20 PM
I think i might have screwed something up. My 5 spd is acting like a hi/lo speed. The shifter only moves forward and backwards in the middle and it is in 3rd gear and it wont shift to anything else unless we do it on the transmission.

Any ideas?
I think it might be the cable but im not sure. This is my first transmission problem.

Recently had a similar situation. In my case it was the shifter cables, and the side-to-side actuator in the shifter assembly that both crapped out. $344 for the dealership to do the job...pi$$ed me off man. Good luck.

The shifter won't physically move side to side? Could be something stuck in the shifter assembly.....? But you won't know til you get it apart.

Check where the shift cables connect to the trans, they should connect to an arm, which is in turn connected to a shaft. It is held on by a roll pin. I had that roll pin shear off on the inside, allowing the arm to move without actually moving the shaft. It was the exact same symptom you are describing, except I was stuck in 1st.

$400 at the dealership to repair a $0.25 part. Pissed me off to no end, but I coudn't get to it at home without dropping the transmission, and that's not something I was ready to attempt since this was my only car at the time.

Sleeper style, they don't see it coming that way.
