Hi. I plan to swap in a Yank converter in a couple weaks, and I know the Yank converter says it will hold up to 600 hp. I just want to know if anyone knows exactly what the weakest point in the 4t40e transmission is. I am an oil pan and set of piston rings short of completing my hybrid quad and putting the motor back in the car. And with a turbo setup in mind for the future, I just want to make sure the gears or half shafts can take this kind of abuse.
Right now, my car should be making about 190 to the wheels N/A, and for now, is the converter good enough? Is there a fair estimate to the transmission's breaking point, such as 240-270 hp or 280 ft-lbs of torque? These are just numbers I pulled out of my ass, but I would seriously like to know, so that I can decide in the future to either do the 5 speed swap or turbo first (...distant future...probably a year or two from now). Thanks.
Brian
p.s. Does the Ld9 and Eco 2.2 have the same bell housing, cause the guy selling the Yank converters on Ebay (davidautoauction) is saying his getrag 5 speed will work for either motor. I know nothing of the Eco, so I'm not quick to judge. I'm just very skeptical.
first the auto will hold more then the maual, i dont know exactlly how much the tranny will hold but i have seen guys with boost and n20 using that tranny, i am about to find out this summer though cause i am going 10 psi and see how long everything will hold up- ask questions before you start chewing my @$$

theres a huge problem with the mentalty that autos hold more. autos may hold more stock for stock but change out a clutch.....

autos will slip before they blow, a manual will just blow up without letting you know you have to much power to it first

Fair enough. You guys have been very helpful... sounds like I'll be running the turbo before swapping the trans. Thanks.
so what is the hp limit on the 4t40e auto tranny before it starts slipping?
|Forged 8.9:1 Wiseco Pistons|Forged Eagle Rods|HPTuners|60trim|Tial Wastegate|
|Precision Intercooler|2.5" Exhaust|2.5" Charge Pipes|630CC Mototron Injectors|
|Stock: Fuel Pump, Transmission, Manifold, TB, Head, Head Gasket, Ignition, Suspension...|
there has been no real limit set, just run it till she blows pretty much, make sure to get a temp guage and watch the temps closely, change fluid regulary, and you should be good

Brian, I also bought a yank converter from that davidautoauction and I emailed him about that.. He said he'll ship out to you according to what motor you have.. I have a 2.4 LD9 goin in.. Im expecting 300 whp out of my motor with the turbo set up.
I have the converter, and plan on buying the Team Green LSD, new gaskets, fluid and seals.. Im hoping my tranny will hold.. I hope to bust axels before my tranny goes

Thanks David, I'll send him an email. On a side note...I thought the lsd's were only made for the manual transmissions?

I put close to 90 hp of nitrous onto my 2000 Z24 w/ 4T40E... with an Autotrans Interceptor at 100% line pressure, an Everco aux trans cooler, and slicks.... never broke once... I pulled 13.8 in the quarter mile three times before someone torched the car.
The only person I know to kill a 4T40E is Rick King.... he put over 700 passes with nitrous on that 97 Z24 though before it broke... and the only reason it broke was he threw a 100 hp progressive nitrous shot at it.... (nothing new)... but that time, he did it with slicks.... BAM... dead.
So... ballpark.... 700 passes on street tires? I think you'll be safe for a bit.

so let me just throw this into proportiion for myself. it seems that really the best way to save your trans is just plain commen sense. I mean keep the line pressure up temps down and be smart and your trans will do what you want it to (with in reason.)

I am on my third 4t40e . . First trans was slipping in every gear without the shift kit on. And when turned on it would shift all shady and the whole car would shudder. i had a Saturn LS 4t45e trans and swapped out all the parts to the 4t40e casing to bolt to the ld9. Also had the Yank torque converter put on it along witha external trans cooler from jegs and the auto trans interceptor shift kit. That trans would have been great but something inside failed and caused slipping after 200 miles and three trips down the track. On 6 psi she pulled a 14.0 flat with a 2.0 60' time on 17" nitto 450s. Instead of me diving back into it I found another 4t40e on ebay with 20k on it for 120 dollars. Shipping was 150 but hey for 300 dollars to have a 20k trans was good enough for me. I kept the yank converter out of it and kept it stock. It has lasted so far and i figure if I can get one season out of a 4t40e i am doing ok. Curently at 10+ psi so we will see what happens when I am track abusing her. Here is the post if you would like to read where I pulled this from. By the way it is holding up fine still.

Mine is holding up strong with the yank converter and doesnt slip at all.
Do you have a 4t40e or a 3 speed ? And can you also show me a dyno sheet of your amazing hp and tq numbers on that 2200? I am amazed at how much power you put down @ 12psi on a t3 super 60. I find that really amazing.

the 2200 could be an Eco. hard to tell from his sig but looks like a newer Sunfire. therfore it would def be a 4T40E.

Taken from his registry. I am gonna say he is full of crap. And the eco was not available in 01. They started in 02 ls sport models.
noone has laid that much down no matter how good the tune with that trim turbo at 12psi. Maybe a hybrid turbo or ball bearing setup. But not with a super 60 on any of the platforms. Adler has the highest 2200 turbo hp from what I am aware of. Or lowfire.

You might wanna look at my registry before you go blabbing your mouth in no way did i try to offend you and do the math adler made 275hp at 15psi im at 12psi 258 and your calling me a liar i guess adler is to right being that he only had 3psi more than me. Its not my fault your the only one breaking your transmission every 200 miles. Its a 2200 that is fully built. Theres another 2200 lee at 230hp at 11psi and its on a stock head and bottom end hes a liar to i guess. I never tried to offend you i dont know why you came out and called me a liar.
Whoa, Whoa... I believe everything that needed to be answered has been. I appreciate everyones insight. Lets not turn this into a war, shall we. Thanks.
Wheres the dyno sheet then? Also adler was not on a super 60 turbo. Congrats I guess. .

Maximum engine torque: 190 lb-ft (260 Nm) (MN4)
205 lb-ft (278 Nm) (MN5)
Maximum gearbox torque: 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) (MN4)
325 lb-ft (440 Nm) (MN5
if some one can help me out this from the GM website
does this mean it will break at 325lbs of torque or will it break at 190lbs?
