non-working speedo
Monday, May 08, 2006 2:42 PM
So the speedometer in my wifes car, '97 w/2.2 and manual, started intermitantly working a while back. Then it progressed to not working till you reached say 55 or 60 and slowly has worked it's way up to not working till like 80 or 85. So now that it's useless I want to fix it. So over this past weekend, I removed, disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled the VSS hoping to have a working speedo again. Well I was wrong, that didn't fix anything. It still doesn't work till 80mph. So what do you guys think, considering it works sometimes, should i get a new sensor or look into the wiring?

My sister had the same problem, was an issue with the battery getting grounded to the tray.

And that didn't effect anything but the speedo? That's kind of weird.

Speedo, tachometer, and fuel gauge.

Well I don't have problems with the fuel gauge, and the tach is non-existant, but I'll check out grounds and wiring since that does look like a legitimate cause.

Any way to test the vss itself?

Pull the VSS out of the transmission. It's magnetic, so it picks up all kinds of metal shavings and all kinda nasty junk. It's probably covered to the point that it cant get a reading anymore. Pull it, clean it, and put it back in. Then take a drive and see if it works again.

WARNING - If this corrects the problem, I wouldnt be suprised if in a short while, she busts the diff. going around a left turn. That many shavings cutting off the sensor usually means that the spider gears are quite torn up and the diff is on it's way out.

Thanks for the input, but I already did that as stated in the original post.

There were a lot of shavings around the magnet, but not in front of it where the little metal part is. I'm aware the diff is about to explode on me, thanks.

mine also stopped working a few weeks before the diff finally blew. it is probably the metal shavings

I am waiting for it to die.

I've been waiting for about 2 years.

I found my original post from almost a year ago asking about cleaning it then, and it had already been malfunctioning for a good year before that.

When I was under the car, I twisted the axles back and forth and the passenger side had a little play and some interesting noises associated with it.

I am not really familiar with how a front wheel drive car goes together yet. When it comes to engines, trannys and diffs, I'm used to working on 4x4 trucks, and mine are fords, so I'm really used to it.

Seems to be coming back to life slowly, today it would hold 77 consistantly and bounce a lot more under that, rather than just read nothing. Does the computer need reset or something? Didn't seem like I'd need to do that.

My bad. I guess i didnt read that far into the post or something.

You may want to just change the VSS at this point.
