wait until you go aftermarket, chopping it will probably mean you won't be able to sell it to someone after... Although I am sure the used jbody shifter market is massive lol.

we just bought our 02 eco and the idiot that had it before shortened so much, that with the tiny apc knob that was onit would wiggle loose after about 15 min of driving, i assumed it was an aftermarket shifter, but i should have known after seeing the apc shift knob. now for my ? what kind of prices can i expect, and from the looks of the plastic under the boot, it looks kinda beat, and tiny pieces of plasctic broke. will my fiancee have issues with this, and is the aftermarket shifter smoother??
moral of the story...just buy the right shifter first, so when someone does buy it, they dont immediatly think what a ghetto ass when they find out its not done right

If you think about how a shifter works, cutting it doesn't make the throw any shorter. The length of the throw id based on the pivot point of the shifter. If you set a real short shifter (B&M) next to the stock shifter, you will see what I mean. The length is shorter, but the pivot point is also higher up on the shifter, which actually reduces the throw. So by cutting your stock shifter, it may seem different, but the throw of the shifter is still the same. I drove a Cavy that had a short shifter and compared it to my car that I have the B&M in, and believe me, there is a difference. You can tell the B&M takes a lot less to go from 1st to 2nd, etc., and its much easier to get the gears in with the B&M. If you hack the shifter, there is less of it there to try to engage the gears.

Im tired of this whole short shifter thing. It makes no difference whether you cut off the top of the shifter or lengthen the bottom of the shifter, you will have to move the shifter less to change gears.
There are different ways of doing it but either way you move the shifter less. I agree that the right way is to lengthen the bottom or buy an aftermarket but one but probably the ultimate is a combination of both. I would say less than an inch and a half is about all you want to take off the top, I added almost an inch to the bottom of mine...shifts much better.
