I have this weird noise in my '03 Vibe's transmission...at least that's where I think it's coming from. It seems to be most noticible in 3rd, 4th & 5th gears and really loud when it's at low RPM's. It kind of sounds like a rattling sort of noise but when I push in my clutch it is silent. It's really annoying! Everything seems to be working fine, the clutch seems good, the gears all feel good, it's just that noise. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I just hope it's not expensive, we're trying to save for a wedding

I don't even know enough to know that I don't know!
Check the fluid level and make sure it's ok. Also the wrong fluid can cause noise/hard shifting...etc.
We were going to buy one of those additives tonight but it was 24$ and I didn't want to waste my money if that wasn't going to help. I just hope we don't need a new transmission! Like I said, the car is only 2 years old...it shouldn't go that quick. I just hate that noise, it's scary, it could mean big $$ that we don't have at the moment!!!

What your hearing is the gears in the transaxle, when you press the clutch the transaxle input shaft stops spinng..thus stops the gears from spinning(well not instantly, but it's easier to say they stop..ne-waz)
If the fluid isn't full, or you don't have the correct fluid(Gm likes to use Syncromesh Transaxle Fluid for there fwd vechicle) ...the trans will make noise. Gm sells the fluid for something like 10cnd a bottle, you need 2 bottles(1L ea.). " Just to make sure, check the owners manual and see what fluid they suggest for the manual transaxle, It should be Syncromessh but just be certain".
There's also a fix some of the J-body guys have been doing on 2k+ Z24's with the getrag 5-speed. They had noisy transaxle and put changed the fluid for the Saturn type of fluid for there manual cars..from what i've heard it solved there problems. But I can't be certain for I own a '97.
Either way your Vibe is 2yrs old right, powertrain warranty is for 5years, 60k. Go to the dealer and have them fix the problem..it's covered on warranty, unless it's just a fluid change, warranty I don't think pays for that. But again the fluid will cost like 20cnd, so it doesn't break the bank
Well, we called our mechanic-friend tonight and explained the noise to him and he told us to fill up with supreme gas. He said it's an engine noise! I hope it works. It actually does make sense because when we bought the car I went for quite a long drive on the highway and I got 650kms out of the tank, then it just went downhill from there. I thought maybe it was because I was using A/C (we got the car in May...almost a/c season) so I didn't think much of it. Well I stopped using the a/c now and I'm still only getting 460-500 kms per tank so, now I know why I got 650 the first time, it was because the lady before us must've used that and then we switched to regular. Tonight we got Transmission fluid, oil, oil filter, spark plugs, and octane booster and my boyfriend is out there changing everything as I type, maybe it'll be 100$ fix!?. Wish me luck, hopefully our friend knows what he's talking about!

PS Thanks for your help EdgeZ24

I don't see it being an engine noise if when you push the clucth the noise stops, Either way, if you have the right transmission fluid and you do change it..make sure the level is correct after your done and I'm thinking that'll solve the problem.
Good Luck !!
Sounds like your throwout bearing.I wouldnt worry about it,my car does the same thing.

throwout bearing make noise when load is applied..this is the opposite

Agreed. If it goes away when you disengage the clutch, its a transmission noise.
I have no idea what the stock c/r is on a Vibe, but I'm guessing its nowhere near high enough to require 90+ octane. Octane booster is a myth. You won't even see a one point increase from that crap.
Is a throwout bearing an expensive fix, or is it something we can do in our backyard?

an hydraulic release bearing for a cavy is around 100cnd(should be the same for your's, and you need to remove the tranaxle. It sits in the bellhousing on the input shaft for the trans. It's a 5/5 do-it-yourself kinda thing..5 being the hardest
But I'm 99.99999% sure this is NOT the problem
