I had called a couple transmission places about possibly beefing up an MK7, but they recommended using the Muncie 282 from behing a 3.1l out of a grandprix, said it would mate fine to my 2.2 OHV 95-97 motor. ANyone else hear about this?

Heres the How To for it.

The 282 is the older version of the NVGT550 (made from 92-94), but you can use either one. They were available on pretty much every 2.8/3.1. The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same on both the 2.2 and the 2.8/3.1, so it works fine.

The MG2 trans was available on 1st/2nd gen Z24s, the Getrag/Muncie 282 up to 91, and the NVGT550 from 92-94. The gearing is the same in both varieties, the only real difference is that the Getrag/Mucine uses an external slave and the NVG has an internal slave. The 282 was also available on older Quad 4s (Beretta GTZs, etc). The bellhousing is different, due to the difference in the engine block. The gearing is different also, but you can swap the Quad 4 gears into the MG2 trans directly for much better 4 cyl gearing than what the 6 cyl gears are set up for.

It came on all the V6 models (RS and Z24). The 2.2 got the MK7.

the website for the how to is down indefinately, does anyone else know which parts i would need from which car, for example, would i use a shifter from a 96 sunfire or a shifter from whichever car is donating the transmission.
same for pedals linkages etc. etc.

if someone can post a list of what parts need to come from what car i would be most appreciative, thanks in advance.

Yeah, the server was destroyed in a fire.

Anyways. I got your email, and I will write back later tonight after I get all the info together.

I don't know about parts interchanging between 3rd gens, but I'm going to assume the pedals and shifters will bolt right up, as long as you keep within the body style (95-99, 00+, etc) If someone else can verify this, that would be great. The cable ends may differ from 2nd to 3rd gen, but it would only be as simple as a different stud on the gate/gear select arms on the trans to compensate.

Well this is an old thread to bring back up... but i guess i will. Well last year i put a new (fenco) clutch in my 96 2.2ohv sunfire, about this summer i lost the ability to disengage the clutch. Which means the vehicle was unable to stop or start and switch gears, i parked it and drove a another car...but now that i have some free time i decided to pull the tranny and see what happened. A piece of the friction disc the retains the dampener spring broke off and got stuck in behind the diaphragm spring. didn't damage much but it junked that clutch and pressure plate. So I ordered and Exedy clutch and decided to tear down the tranny why it was being shipped, i haven't pressed the bearings off yet to check the syncos but they appear not to be split or cracked, but the spider gears in the differential are done... i'm honestly surprised it still held lol. There is only about 1/2 of each tooth left. Now trying to rectify the problem without spending alot since its a sunfire not worth alot either, i was thinking of replacing the spiders with geo/isuzu spiders......OR i have a HM282 out of a 2nd Gen RS in the shed.....i know they share the same bell housings and the 282 uses an external slave, but do the mounts line up? and i'm unsure about the axles. I remember reading about people doing this swap before and i'm curious if anyone may be able to help me with what i need new or swapped... thanx for your help.

Any information relevant will be appreciated.

First off, i would like to know how to edit posts? secondly i would like someone else just to verify that this is infact a hm282 transmission i was unable to find the " H " stamped on the casting( first three digits are 1LJ ).

i believe it to be the 282 because it does not accept the hydraulic release bearing, the casing between the input and output shafts stops it from seating all the way. i was thinking on attempting to cut a 1/4" groove between like the isuzu and nvg have. i don't think that the pin that is normally present to prevent the release bearing from turning is of the most importance, since the bearings i remove never look worn around it and the rubber plug the lines go through have never appeared worn or broke.

well, i apologize if most of what i'm saying seems confusing..but if you can help in any way please feel free to add your input

well now after looking at the pictures i just posted i realized to things....first i need to machine down the entire ring and remove the bearing sleeve.....starting to realize why no one has done this before...

with the 282 you just need to convert to external slave....

yeah when i moved from my parents house 4or5 years ago i left all my parts and tool theres.... the basement flooded and abunch of crap got thrown out...was attempting to make this a cheap build but it doesnt seem so...i was thinking about ordering one all last night while trying to figure out a kosher way to machine it down...i always remembered them being a 1 peice setup?master line and slave all factory attached? but when i called to order it today they sell seperatly. does anyone know is the bore in stroke between the 2nd and 3rd gen are the same? and do they use the same line ends?
