Gears in auto and manual

I just want an opinion here, I know that the gears in the automatic cavys are way more open than the manual cavys (i have a manual). The autos go around 40 in first while the manuals go about 20-25 in first. So I was wondering, what if one of the manual Cavys has the same gearing as an auto, would it beat a normal cavy??

It all depends on how well the opponent can shift. Other than that it should be about the same, unless he is running something under the hood. In my 01 cavy my first gear goes up to 25-30 and its an automatic.

Unless for some ungodly reason the manual was a 4 speed, the manual would still beat an auto for the fact that automatic transmissions lose more power to the wheel due to more processes that goes on inside the transmission than manuals...but because of the gearing being the same, the autos wouldn't be too off.

Also, the reason the gearing is different is because they (manuals) have 1 more gear.

Are you talking 20-25 mph? I'm not sure what you mean. First gear can go way past 25 mph, but not for optimal gas usage.

^^^ not trying to say you didn't know that or something, but just wondering what your point was.

No way, serious. I have an '05 Cavy and its a manual, around 5,000 rpms its only going a little over 20 mph, maybe 25 mph. Thats what I am worried about. For crying out loud, I have a friend that has a Celica GT with 120 lbs of torque but I dont know if I can beat him cause his first gear goes up to 40 mph.

The reason your car might shift so early is because your gearing ratio is much closer...that's a good thing. The closer the gearing, the faster you motor revs.

the lower the gear the easier it is to move the car. that being said the only way a car of equal weight and power could possibly win would be if you had to shift at the end of the 1/4 mile and the other cars gears were just tall enough to not need to shift and hold it thru the traps. in that scenario the extra shift could be just enough to lose. this would really only apply if the power and weight were equal.

autos are typically slower than manuals because of gear ratios and a little bit more drivetrain loss in an auto. they change the ratios between autos and mans to keep the cars drivable. meaning highway rpms should be very similar from auto to manual, so gas milage is retained. since there are less gears in the auto they have to make the gearing so that the car stays inside its usable power range, then adjust the spped with the fdr. all this together will make it slower.
