Ive been doin ALOT of research on boosting my OHV 2.2 over the winter, and it leads me to my next concern which is this transmission.....how weak are they? im looking to do a full rebuild of my engine, and run about 8-10lbs of intercooled boost
i plan on buying a whole new transmission anyway, cuz the one i have now has 83,000 miles on it, so i dont really trust it under that much power.....but i dont want to waste my money if im not gonna be able to keep one of these izuzu's in one piece
so whats everyone think/know about this trans? if your boosted with one how has it held up?
Since money dosnt seem to be a problem with you, you should be able to just go out and buy a new/built transmission rite??

lol yea im on somewhat of a budget cuz im trying to buy a ZR2 s-10 as a daily driver
Honestly, I've been through 3 Isuzu's, and been around people that have gone through a couple too. Here's my thoughts:
It's not really power that kills the transmissions. It's wheel hop, and hard shifting. Wheel hop takes out differentials, and hard shifting rips out the syncro's. The common gear to lose syncro's first is third, because going from second to third has a large RPM drop due the ratio's, which really stresses them out.
Mike Karas layed down 410 WHP with an otherwise stock Isuzu with a Quaife differential. Fix the weak dif, and don't shift hard, and it should last a long time.
O noes!
i got 143k miles on my stock isuzu tranny and i am boosted.
ive heard that it stands up to 200 hp if ya treat it right
alright sounds like i should be ok....might look into upgrading the diff
I had 186000km on my original izuzu and probally 20000were in boost without a problem.
I think Karas had cyotreated internals in his trans..... along with the Quaife.......
The only thing I've seem go so far on the Isuzu, is the diff....... the rest seams to hold up fine.
We fixed the diff issue by welding it solid....... not recomended for a street car
