Well guys...the point of this post is because I wanted to help someone out by answering their question on what to do or what parts you need in order to do a Auto to 5 speed tranny swap for the ECOTEC motors. I did a VERY extensive search...even searched in the Archives and couldn't find anything with really any good details on what to do.
Funny enough, every post that I found that someone asked what to do or what parts they need, there would be 1 or 2 posts saying "USE THE SEARCH BUTTON".
If you know what to do, please be helpful to the people that in the future are going to use the Search button and the current people who are still looking for answers.
Your help is greatly appreciated...

bare minimum of parts you'd need from a donor car
-Transmission (MUST be out of an ecotec car... other bolt pattern bellhousings do NOT fit)
-Transmission mounts
-Clutch
-Throwoutbearing
-clutch master cylinder
-clutch slave cylinder
-clutch hydraulic lines
-clutch pedal
-flywheel
-shift linkage
-shifter
-center console from 5 speed car
not sure what else you'd need, but thats a start....
if you got a front clip or a junk car the swap would be a LOT easier
just park both cars next to eachother take both apart and swap the parts take pictures and crap it should be plug n play in theory... to an extent.
Need to chop a hole in the firewall for the clutch pedal
OH and the manual car's brake pedal too...

DJ it's not for me, it's for people who really want to know what to do in the future and now present.

You might want to talk to John Lenko, he's done the swap on the red car that was at the bash.
He'd know better than anyone since he's done it
yeah the swap is the same no matter what motor you have
Heh.. it's fun, let me tell ya.
Get the tranny... flywheel... pedals... clutch master cylinder... slave cylinder... clutch... engine bay wiring harness (if you use same year, it should be plug & play)... mounts... brackets...
drop the old tranny & engine. It's easier to do it all together. take apart the motor & trans... remove the starter, you get the three bolts on the flex plate to torque converter housing that way. Separate the two, remove the flex plate... install the flywheel (use the correct length bolts, which are longer than the flex plate ones, but same thread.) I used blue threadlocker. My flex plate bolts came out with blue on them. GM says use red. Use whatever you want, but use something. mount up the tranny and bolt it to the engine.
grind off the old auto tranny mounts.. weld in new brackets for the getrag mounts. rear one from GM, front one from Turbo Tech Racing. Don't waste your time trying to cut one off a wrecked car, it's more trouble than it's worth. Measure 10 times, to make sure you've got it right. Tack weld them in place, then do a test fit with the tranny & engine. Once you're sure they're in right, weld 'em in good.
Install the 5 speed shifter and pedals.. including the new gas/brake pedals (one assembly, and the brake is smaller). Cut the hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder & pedal. You'll need the two nuts on the cylinder, plus one bolt to the steering column. I just raided the junkyard for small pieces every couple of days until it was done.
Put it all together, bleed the clutch, and you're good to go.

So the 2002 2200 getrag trany does not bolt up to the ecotec? I've heard that it does and that it doesn't.
Oh would a Ion 5spd work in a cavalier, aren't they the same trans M86?
After some searching... I think they are the same. At least GM Parts Direct says they are.
It said 2003-2004 all applications. And 2002 OHC - DOHC

No it will not fit

Bellhousing middle section is different. The rest of the case is the same though, so change that and it will bolt up fine. Of course, the gear ratios are different.... so... you probably want to just find the right one.
AFAIK, the 2.4L and Eco are different as well.

Thanks for the bad news.. j/k. How big a difference in the gear ratios?
2.2L is a 3.63 final drive ratio, 2.4L/Eco is a 3.91 FDR. Just for @!#$s & giggles... the 3 speed auto is a 3.18 FDR..

4spd auto is 3:89
i know the trans on the redline motor isnt a bolt in swap for the cavs , maybe into a N-body would be easier , the mounting brackets are in alot different place
Could you save yourself the welding in of the new mounts by putting in a subframe from a 5spd I cav? I am dropping my turbo H/O motor with the NVG tranny into a cav that had a 2.2 ohv and a 3spd auto. I don't want to weld in new mounts because I think the torque might kill the welds after a little abuse with the slicks and spec stage 4 clutch......

Better weld them in good and tight then...
The subframe doesn't hold the motor in... it's for the suspension. The only part on the subframe that goes to the motor directly is the lower mount... and really, it's just to stop the engine moving forwards and backwards. The subframe is the same on all J's.
The engine and tranny mounts are on the frame rails in the engine bay, not the subframe.
Surprisingly... the mounts (on a 5 speed, stock) aren't welded in all the way around. Mine are, and should be much stronger than a production car... so just do a good job and you'll be fine.
<a href="http://www.lenkorules.com/"><img src="http://s93165229.onlinehome.us/images/misc/redsig.jpg"></a>
ooooooh. I could have sworn they had mounts on the subframe from the last few motors I've pulled from the junkyard. I guess I've never dropped a subframe really to know though. Thanks for the info. I am mostly worried about the welds because I have a separated shoulder (ripped off both tendonds connecting the collar bone to the shoulder) and I can't do much of anything right now. I have to guide a few friends through the process for me which is mechanically fine. I've tought them all well
. None of them can weld very well. I guess I will get someone else over for the welding since I can't do it myself right now.
Thanks for the info Lenko!

I believe the 2.4 getrag is a 3.94 ratio.
FU Tuning
according to gm service information......the final gear ratios are the same
an ion trans has a diff case half outer side.......
i took it all apart and have a franken trans....lol
but the ion to cavalier should have the same final drive
according to gms tech website

Well I have done it as well.
Tranny
Flywheel
Clutch
Pressure plate
Flywheel bolts
Pressure plate bolts
Throw out bearing
Clutch master cylinder with the reservoar and the line to the throw out
Tranny mounts
Brackets, like it was said, buy the rear from GM and bottom either torch it off or get one.
Shifter cables
Shifter
Clutch pedal is all that is needed if you don't mind a wide ass brake pedal, I don't.
You can rewire the stock auto wiring like I did in past it is very easy cause most of the sensors WILL cancel out when you reprogram the ECU,
Get a donor VIN # and take it to dealer to flash it and the mileage.
Axles as well.
That is about it man, it is a very interesting swaps as I have done most of them in my Chassis.
2.4L, OHV and Ecotec ARE ALL DIFFERENT TRANNIES. The bellhousing, but to change the bell housing you have to take the whole thing apart to the intermediate and main shafts and differential, very nasty job, so just get the tranny that is right for the motor with a proper bellhousing.

easier way......... use your stock harness........
You just need to jumper the neutral safety switch and swap (I think) in a connector for the reverse lights...... the stock reverse light connector might work, but I forget.

ok this is what i have going on i have a 98 cavalier z24 i threw the rods in it while racing i have put atleast 4,000 in to the body and about 2,000 into the engine well i now have a lot of parts for a 2.4litre i need to get rid of if any of you would like to contact me about them or the engine you can the engine still runs, but getting to the point i am doing an engine swap, from my 2.4 to a ecotec 2.2, and i need to know if my 5 speed tranny will bolt up to this new engine, or what i need to do, this engine is coming out of a 2002 cavalier z24 do any of you guys have a comment on this or what i can do?? the ecotec is a vin "F" any questions about the parts or the engine call me i also will trade, for ecotec parts 4025251256 thanks jake or email me at paintballer37@hotmail.com
Your tranny will not bolt up to the ecotec. Take it from someone who has done 2 ecotec swaps. get a donor car.
