well i got my prothane 5 speed transmission mounts today. Is there anything I should know before crawling under there? what tools will I need? I have heard mention of a press...what if i don't have access to one?
just want to make sure i am prepared to do it right the first time
You can use a vise, a little lithium grease and a prybar. Your lug nut wrench will work fine. When you start pressing them in, you will notice that only part of it will go in and you need to use the prybar to help push some of the mount into the socket. then continue pushing it in. You can use your car jack to hold the tranny in place while you remove the mounts. I just did mine about four days ago. Now the engine hardly moves at all. You'll need to remove the passenger side wheel and wheel well covers. That will make it even easier to get to. Don't forget your jack stands. You might also have to loosen the washer resevoir to make room to get the tranny bolt out. Size 13mm and 15mm are the tools you'll need for the main parts and a small socket to remove the cover screws and pull out some of the push clips to get the covers off. Good luck.
the small sockets for the splash guards are 7mm.

a little elboy grease, a flat head screw driver, and a mallet did the job for me.
Tranny mount and insert.
Start pushing the insert into the mount at an angle as hard and as much as you can.
With the screw driver, push the lip on the insert into the mount little by little. Patience!!!
You'll soon get the insert in this much and you can now use the mallet to push it all the way through.
for some reason, the rear mount was more difficult to replace. not a big difference though. it took no more than 5 minutes to replace each insert
Peace Out!!!
Are the mounts only for the 5 speed or are they compatiable with the 4T40Es as well
only for five speeds 95 and up.
Peace Out!!!
what are the benefits of this mod? i doubt performance but do u get cleaner shifts, or what?
they dont allow as much tranny movement when you accelerate and therefore transfers power to the wheels more quickly. i really dont know about cleaner shifts sincei just got a new clutch too. i am getting cleaner shifts though, but i know know which is the benefitting factor.
Peace Out!!!
Enjoy getting to the rear mount. I just did this over the weekend, not hard at all.
It makes life a lot easier if you move your brake stuff forward, that way you can access all 3 rear mount bolts from the top of the car. I got the 4th bolt through the wheel well.
