what needs to be done to make a 4t40e withstand that much power?
I would say that your biggest concern is going to be the input and output shafts. I know the GTP guys go through them in their tranny's (4T65E's) like crazzy when they start modding and that is a stronger tranny.
on 3psi untuned i put 206 ft lbs at the wheels. in summer, ill be running 18+ lbs of boost, so yes.
Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..
We can all guess until we are blue in the face, but noone on the org has made that much TQ on an auto tranny. There are a couple who have rebuilt their trannies but are not making that kind of power yet

ok first of all in response to the statement no one on the org has that much power and torque.that is not true........mine is just parked.and I am not the only one.........and second...call level 10 and say they are dumbasses not to mention a rip off for what you have......couple things.the input and output shaft on the 4t40E is beefy....you wont break it if you take the neccassary steps..first..the achilles heal of the 4speed is the pump.....it doesn't flow enough under heavy load...so put a better/bigger pump in there........upgrade the clutch packs....use redline stainless steel clutch packs.....they will not burn up..ever.....so when you are flogging the @!#$ out of the tranny you wont wear on that stuff.......also the differential is ok but not the best...you cna still shear it apart......so use the differential out of a 60 or 65E I dont remember which one...or a quaiffe or allis differential would also be nice.....they are both lsd........then of course put a shift kit on when the trans goes back together....get an additional trans cooler and a good higher stall torque converter.......slap on an auto trans interceptor....set to max line pressure and its all money......keep the fluid clean and cool and you will have a hard time breaking that thing..and control wheel hop and you will have a hard time breaking axles.......email me if you need for info.......good luck....and dont try and rebuild it yourself.........nothing good can come of it. check out a local reputable shop.....this should all cost about 1500 or so bucks give or take a hundred or two.....of course you will have to pull your trans out of the car yourself
ok just to clarify what you had said, very good info btw thanks, but if i can just get an LSD i wont need a diff out of a 60 or 60E? and the price you mentioned is that including cost of the LSD itself and to install it ?
thanks again
I'm not racist, I hate everyone equally.
04 sunfire auto 16.3@82.5.................for now
granted i have a 3 speed auto, i also built mine up and could probably handle that much....
1500 was roughyl what i spent not including the LSD conversion...
levelten.com will do it, and they are world reknown, for about 2600$ the whole shebang... although if you look around locally, you can get it done.
the 4 speed tranny and the 3 speed tranny are VERY similar, minus a few parts....
theres a post called "3 speed finally done" if you want more info...
Crash wrote: ..first..the achilles heal of the 4speed is the pump.....it doesn't flow enough under heavy load...so put a better/bigger pump in there....
Which do you recommend?
Do you have a part #? or supplier?

I'll call the shop that built my tranny and ask them...I wanna say it was out of a 4L60 or 4L80 I am honestly not sure but I will find out
I can rebuild autos. If you know what you are doing it is not all that hard to do. It will take a day or two. If you don't know though, don't even attempt it! It wouldn't hurt to upgrade the intermediate band if you are doing the clutch packs. Besides for the shift kit, you shouldn't need to touch the valve body, Just be worried about the rotating mass inside. The whole planetary assembly could probably use a good nitriding. I would go with the quaiffe LSD also. Deffinately go with a higher stall torque converter. If it is possible, use one that is a little smaller than stock. You also might want to upgrade to a stronger flex plate. Just my $0.02.
crash - now with that 4L60/4L80 pump, was there any thing special about installing that into a 4T40E? or does it just slip right in?
thanks
Ladwig's Sunfire and the GM Phase 5 Cobalt run a modded 4T65 bolted up to an Eco.
You might consider starting with that trans and contact Ladwig's team or GM Performance for info on parts or sourcing.
I thought that was the whole point of the Cobalt Phase 5....... to help Eco owners with building their cars from the GMP catalog.

Just an FYI for everyone. The company I work for designs and builds the 4t40e, 4t65 as well as GM/Ford's (joint venture) new 6 speed tranny pump.
I am confused how you could take the pump from a 4L60, 5L40, 4L80 etc since the transmission pump in all of these are not removable from the tranny.
However the 4t40, 4t65 are bolt on variable displacement pumps.
It is possible to beef up the 4T40 pump rather easily. From the factory, the pump has a ball bearing/spring relief valve. The spring in this system determines at what pump pressure the relief valve opens.
By changing to a spring with a higher spring constant, the pump will run to higher pressures. I am pretty sure we actually make a "high" performance pump with a higher rated relief spring.
I will review the FEA (Failure Effects Analysis- for you Engineers out there!) and determine at what torque the pump will fail.

This post is awesome. My tranny is starting to go also. The most boost my car has seen is 7psi and the tranny barely can handle that. i have to turn the interceptor up to 100% and then the pump overheats and it starts shifting all wierd. Feels like its in fourth gear when i am only doing 25 30 mph. The whole car shutters and doesnt want to shift right. and it screeches.... Kinda sucks that i know it is coming sooner than expected. in fact i thought my engine would go before teh tranny but now that i am runnin the superchager reflash i should be ok as far as that goes for now.
In that case, how do they put them in the tranny? If it can be done, it can be un-done my friend.

Of course you can replace the pump. The pumps on all of the transmissions noted above are variable displacement slide/rotor pumps.
On the 4L60 and 5L40 pumps, the slide and rotor are placed into a machined pocket on a plate the size of the large end of the bell housing ( I have schematics similar to the ones above if anyone is interested). The slide has an inside diameter of 92mm and the rotor has an outside diameter of 75mm and rotor is driven directly off the torque converter shaft using 2 lugs on the bore of the rotor(ie: the pump is internal to the transmission).
However, on the 4t40 and 4t65 transmissions, the pump is a stand alone unit. They and can easily be removed and the entire pump replaced as a unit without dismantling the transmission. On these pumps there is a chain drive system that connects the pump to the torque converter shaft. By disconnecting the chain, the pump will not spin.
The slide in these applications have only a 63mm inside diamter and the rotors have a 46 mm diameter with a spline form bore to drive the pump.
It is impossible to put a 4L60 or 5L40 pump into a 4T40 transmission without custom fabricating a standalone pump housing for it and a chain drive system to run.
As stated above, I can provide schematics of both transmission pumps. However, I do not know how to post, so I will have to send to someone.

How much does the stock pump flow? I mean... I'm sure there are some possibilities out there.
