Ecotec Fuel Management

Hey guys,

I am almost done piecing together my kit, and was wondering what kind of things you guys are doing to control fuel?

I think I'm going to use megasquirt with my setup.

Also post any troubles you had...etc

good choice. that's what I'm going to be using. Better do it right the first time and learn that than go spend loot on piggybacks like everyone else does including myself. You should be pretty happy once you learn it

Plan on it.

I going to use the MS1 V2.2

just need it for fuel.

Also going to buy those 2.4gm s/c injectors (310cc)

for $25 an injector... that's a good deal

has anyone used ms on the eco?

If so did the computer freak out because it wasn't controlling the injectors anymore or does it not care?

how much boost are you planning to run? since megasquirt can write very accurate volumetric efficiency tables for you, you may want to go with something bigger as you will be able to tune precisely for bigger injectors and still not have any idle problems.

Rich (exterminator) runs MS on his 04 turbo eco. ( 9 psi and 224hp with a rough tune). He runs 440cc injectors (green tops). The only problem that he had with it is an issue with the coolant temp sensor not giving an accurate reading which gives him cold-start issues, but he plans on swapping to a different sensor which will be installed in the upper rad hose via a tapped pipe.

Other than that, once he had the board put together and the base maps worked out, the car was tuned to 6 psi within days, just driving it on the street and letting MegaTweak use the wideband O2 to refine the maps.

My advice is to hit up the MS forums and website, to get a really good understanding of whats involved with building, installing, and tuning the unit.

MS is probably the current best option for fuel control on the eco because there are some people who find that they simply can't use emanage or the simpler afpr/big injector/fmu setup, because their ecu's will pull back pulsewidth to get 14.7:1 all the time, even under WOT and boost (this is a bad thing). Generally it seems this is more prevalent among 04-up models, as phil doesn't have any problems, nor does jon (airtonics) with emanage, but Hypsy, Rich, and one or two others have had the issue. Better to be safe and go with something like MS which takes all fuel control away from the ECU than to spend $600 + injectors on emanage or $400-500 for the fpr/injector/fmu setup only to find out you have one of the pain in the ass ecu's that won't cooperate with them. And MS is a great deal too, if you already have a laptop, its about $300 total to setup, not including injectors.

My upcoming cav project will be using MS for fuel and spark control

I've been looking at a lot of things and emanage... yuck. I've seen / heard many horrror stories.

My Buddy tristan from turbosaturns.net builds ms kits so I'm going to buy an assembled kit from him.

I'm really bad with a soldering iron lol

I'm going to be using a td04l from a wrx at 7psi.

Don't really have a goal, Just want a good tune and we'll see what comes up.

You also said about having an adjustable fuel pressure regulator or so.

My question is, if the megasquirt is controlling the fuel. should I be able to get it to idle nicely without the need of a afpr?

Oh BTW this is a Saturn ION, so I'm going to get the pinout guide soon.

Also with megatweak, that's all automatic? If so that's pretty cool

Yes, you can make big injectors run even with the stock FPR. How big is open to some calculating though, i'd say having an adj. fpr might be a good idea just in case but most likely you won't need it.

Megatweak doesn't do EVERYTHING for you, but it does make things go a LOT quicker. You have to set up what a/f ratio you want to request it to tune for, than use the "stimulator" to set up base maps good enough to idle and drive gently. Then just start recording a log on Megatweak, drive it around the block nice and easy, pull over, stop the log, open it up, and tell Megatweak to apply its recommended changes. Then start recording again and you'll be able to get a little more aggressive, just keep watching the wideband gauge to make sure you aren't getting lean in boost, and keep updating the logs. This way you really can tune the car yourself, without a dyno, just driving on the road, with no need for a copilot to work the laptop entering in different values while bouncing around and holding on for dear life Note that this is a highly abridged version of how it works, but the detailed methodology is found on the megasquirt site.
