Okay so I've been doing alot of reading lately on bov's and turbos, and compressor maps etc.....
I was wonder .... does this list make sense ????
Lag is effected by: turbo specs
charge piping size
type of Bov
ignition......
I was wondering .................
Could there be something wrong with my car ........... I see NO lag ......... I'm not getting compressor surges, I have 2" charge pipes....... and a t3 .63 trim turbo.............with a sequential bov, and stock ignition other then plugs wires and coilpacks................
ummmm 2.5" mandrel downpipe and 3" mandrel exhaust with No cat or muffler.... (NO restriction)
so whats going on ????
is there something wrong ???? or did I just choose all the right parts and have no lag as a result of an efficient set up ......................
I think thats what it is ....... because I'm at 11psi on stock internals.................with 120000km on my motor........... running STRONG............
tuning wise.... ford redtops....(330cc) afpr and an adjustable fmu ............
so whats going on here...... is it just the right combo of parts ??

lag is affected by turbo size. smaller turbo=smaller turbine. bigger turbo=bigger turbine. the bigger it is, the harder and longer it takes to spin.
think of it like this.
u know the lil windmills that were around when we were kids that u held in your hand. u would walk and it would spin. wouldnt make alot of air.. but it made a lil bit really fast.
now think of a fan on a hovercraft or on a huge windmill.. their big and it takes a long time to get spinning. once they get spinning, they make alot of air. turbines in turbos work the same way.
im running a 16g with all 2.5 charge pipes and 2.5 exhaust with no cat and a borla muffer. im at full boost around 2700-3k.
i met a some guy last week with a turbo b16 civic that was fully built and he opened the hood. 4 in piping coming off the hot side of the turbo and 4 inch catback. it was a kit made by full race. the turbo was like a T-66 or T-88 or some @!#$ like that. he said he doesnt hit full boost till 5300.
^^^ Too bad most of the power made on those Honda Engines are all up in the high RPM Range. VTEC BABY!!!!!
yeah but their short geared tranny makes up for it.... they get into their powerband quicker then most cars. well the dohc vtec engines anyway. only bad thing is, going down the freeway in my buddies b16crx in 5th gear at 75-80, were at about 4700-5000 rpms.

RPM and powerband do not affect boost. Turbos are load dependend. The more displacement (exhaust in CFM) the more the turbo will spool. It's a combination of what your motor is putting out and what it's sucking in.

That is true but only to a certain extent. Adding a cam set with longer duration (more over lap) that pushes the usable power band to a higher rpm range can effect turbo spool time in the lower rpm range.

if what you say is true than why are some people complaining about having a hard time staying out of boost ? Obviously it means they aren't mashing the pedal thus less load and should stay out of boost, right?

it doesn't take the same amount of load to spin any turbo. for that reason, a cavalier couldn't spin a .82 a/r T04 turbo probably at all lol. If people are having a hard time staying out of boost, their turbine a/r is small enough that they will spool the turbo at just about any amount of throttle. That's why i pick turbos for my setups that start spooling just beyond that so you don't have to be in boost if you don't want to be.

RPM and powerband do affect boost. Powerband is the direct comparison of airflow into the engine.
O noes!
yeah but a fast spooling turbo is very fun
I agree.... so back the original question .... is there something wrong .... or did I just choose my parts wisely ..... (it did take 9 months to find the right turbo, intercooler etc......)

Do you seriously think something is wrong or did you just start this post to brag about your set up?

Lag is a good thing when drag racing. In a properly designed setup in a 1/4 mile race the only lag you see is in 1st gear, possibly second. The lag allows for low end traction off the line. AFter that, you are in the efficency range of the turbo thru each shift never dropping to low RPMs.
Lag is commonly misunderstood and is another perpetuation of the ricer generation. The only BAD lag is when the turbo is too large and you're not instantly at your proper boost level by next gear shift.

I think there is something wrong because I would see NO lag ....
And I'm hearing about BOV's that are letting off all the boost pressure.......... well mine does and doesn't depending on my driving ........ during a fast shift it doesn't let out nearly as much during a slow shift (during a slow shift it takes upwards of 5 seconds to finish going TSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTS
hit 11 pounds and it would almost feel as if the power would drop off.............. I think I was pulling timing due to leaning out (as I saw on my dyno run)...... that problem has been fixed with bigger injectors just haven't had the chance to take it on the road yet............. gotta rebuild the turbo ................hot side oil seal is poped.
So I don't know if my BOV is broken and or leaking and resulting in getting compressor surges............ because the turbo blew twice........ just the hot side oil seal......... (I also had a 3/8" return line which is now a 1" line... but I still haven't taken out the car) It snowed like a bitch up here

That "TSTSTSTSTSTSTS" noise you are talking about sounds like compressor surge. I had the same thing with 2 different BOV's till I ran a big a$$ vac line to it directly that I tapped directly into the manifold. IDK, just sounds like what I was experiencing when my car was shifting at low rpms.
Failure is not failure if you learn from it
no no no ...... my bov is sequential.....it blows off TSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTS thats how it sounds..... it just does it for a long time... maybe not 5 seconds.... but like 3-4 probably.... and during a fast shift it's just a big PSSSSSSHHHSTSTST
I really don't know if it's my bov I'll check it out ..........

I really think the power loss I was experiencing was my computer pulling timing to the max because I was leaning so much ..... My dyno sheet shows DRASTIC leaning.... I got new injectors, fmu, AFPR, etc....... so I think that will be fixed when I get it tuned and back together for the start of summer!

haven't you ever heard of wastegate flutter

um no dude, the tststststs is not your blow-off valve, read up on your bov and learn why they are called sequential. They DONT make that noise.
the tststststs is compressor surge because your bov isnt opening at all. let me guess...when you shift and hear the tstststs does your guage still read boost?
adjust your bov screw so that it will open during any type of shift, be it slow or fast. That will make the tstststs sound will go away, the boost guage needle will shoot to vac as soon as you close the throttle (which is a good thing), and you probably will stop blowing oil seals.

guys......
THE BOOST GAUGE GOES TO VAC EVERYTIME.... to -20 .....in/hg.........
then back to 5 psi INSTANTLY
it doesn't STOP at 0 and climb to 11psi.... it instantly goes to 5psi .then climbs to 11psi.. I know the STSTSTS is my bov...... trust me .......
I just wanted to know if that is supposed to happen .... if it is supposed to go from 11(then I shift) down to 20 in/hg... then I slam the gas and goes DIRECTLY to 5 psi again ..... then climbs to 11 .... is my turbo just good for the application ???
okay I watched the movie.... I'm going to host it at putfile....
you can see for yourself the gauge is fine going into vac like it's supposed to etc....
I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF IT IS OKAY THAT I GO INTO BOOST (5psi) INSTANTLY.....
CHECK IT OUT>>>>>http://media.putfile.com/Cavalier-Boost-Gauge-8psi
it's a quicktime file .... sorry ... my camera sucks ...

vid looks fine to me, my boost guage has never stopped at 0 then climbed. it always goes right to where I set my boost....no climbing at all actually.
