Custom turbo install pics. (2.4L)

Here's some install pics. Car is filthy and has been in the garage for a few months now. I took these with my phone so that's why they look so bad. Waiting for the turbo to get back from getting rebuilt in good ole' Canada, and she'll be all done.

At the same time I was snapping pictures, my dad and brother were working on one of their projects. They always seem to amaze me. Today's word is "REDNECK". LOL! So anyway, you know those Kawasaki Mule things? Well, dad seems to think he can make one of them. He did. It works alright, but looks like hell. He made this thing last year some time and just drug it out of the weeds yesterday and they've been working on the engine. It has an engine out of a Polaris snowmobile (man that thing was FUN!) with a centrifugal clutch. It has a lawn mower rear end and a tilt bed. I guess it works for what he wants it for, but I wouldn't be caught dead on the thing! Sorry, dad. Dad welded ALL of my piping for me (exhaust and intake piping) on my turbo project, so much thanks to him. He's been a welder for 30+ years, so it came in handy. Here are the pics!

If you're REAL daring, you'll get Quicktime Alternative, or something else that will play .3GP files from a phone, and watch this video of my brother riding the thing. At the end, he mashes the gas pedal and it takes off.

My brother riding the mule.

It's a custom kit. Dad did all the welding and mainly anything to do with running the intake and exhaust pipes. The other stuff was all done by myself after I got home from work. I had a small amount of help from my brother and a friend of mine, since we first tried putting the turbo in from below the car. LOL!

Any piece of information I could remember or find is in my registry... Part numbers, places I ordered from, etc.

I'm not having any fuel or ignition problems that I know of. The car ran GREAT the day I got to take it out of the garage, but the oil seals in the turbo are blown. So it's getting a rebuild at Blaast Performance.

I'm pretty sure I was the reason the seals are blown... It was my fault. I didn't realize (and sorta still don't understand) that when engine does not have a load on it (neutral or up on jackstands), it hardly builds any boost at all. But on the road, it went into boost sooo easily and sounded soooooooo good. So anyway, dad and I were trying to find out what the wastegate was set at, and we were revving the engine while the car was in neutral and up on jackstands. At like 5,500rpm, it would build about 2psi. Didn't make sense. Now I know though. It was an expensive "trial and error" but I'm pretty sure the damage was my own fault. I don't know anyone with a turbo'd car, so I have no experience with turbos whatsoever. I guess I learned by doing. I've done ALOT of reading, but that is one thing I never read about.

All in all, everything worked perfect except for my small oil leak coming from the center housing on the exhaust side of the turbo. It would only leak under hard acceleration (due to the higher oil pressure). If the turbo ever gets past the border, and into Canada, Blaast will be rebuilding it.

So far so good. It's a small turbo, but it's better than nothing. Quick spooling is VERY nice. Can always upgrade later on.

nice man, its funny how some cars can build boost at idle, (i.e)i've seen a neon. i can't even get the bov to shoot off.

hold on what size is your oil return line >??? if it';s too small it would make the turbo seal pop...... 1/2" or larger is good...

Syn: The nickname goes back to my high school days. I was a fan of the Insane Clown Posse, and one of the members names is "Shaggy 2 Dope". My nickname on the Internet for the past 17 years or so has been "m0". Most sites won't accept a login name which is 2 characters in length, so I started using "shaggy2m0".

Lee: Return line is 5/8" but I'm sure that bigger would be better... I'm going to run a clear return line for a few minutes at idle and see if its backing up. Then I'll replace it with the normal line.

What I don't understand is that there are TONS of people running setups with smaller return lines than I have. They don't have problems. Who knows. I'll definately troubleshoot it a little more careful once I get my turbo back from Blaast Performance. Rebuilds aren't exactly pocket change. I'd to it myself but the thought of taking something apart that spins 100,000+rpms doesn't sound comforting.

Wish me luck.

Nice job, looks good.

That afpr you got from summit says it fits the V8 chevys and its not universal. Did you have to do anything to make it work with your 2.4?

Excidium: Oops!! I meant to say "10 years"... Haha. I first had an Internet connection through CompuServe and had to dial long-distance to get online. Mom monitored my hours because of the long-distance call. I must have done something weird in my head to come up with 17 years. Lol! I'm only 22, so 17 years does sound kinda weird. Like I was on the Internet when I was 5.

WHITECAVY: I saw that a few other J's here had that exact same AFPR... I just did a member search for the part number. It goes in place of the stock FPR on the end of the rail. Fits like it was meant to be there. Mine adjusts from 35 to 70psi. (I think that's correct)... There is another that adjusts from 25psi to 60psi or something. I wish I woulda gotten it. But the car ran PERFECT when I had it out. If that damn turbo didn't leak, I'd still be driving it. Fuel was perfect (as far as I could tell - wideband/dyno would probably tell me different), ignition was perfect, idled like stock, accelerated like stock. I was very suprised that I didn't run into more problems than I did.

Also, your oil return may be okay (make sure you have minimal bends though). Have you checked the oil pressure in the feed line? it needs to be really really low

Not being able to build much boost preassure out of gear it totally normal. It takes a certain matter of time and exhaust energy to spool the turbo in gear or out of gear. When you are out of gear your motor will rev up to redline in less time at wide open throttle than it takes to spool the turbo, when you are in gear at wide open throttle the the motor can only rev up at a fraction the the speed giving the turbo much more time to spool.

Ever since people have been turbocharging their 2.4's i've been reading posts about oil seals in turbos blowing out. It has been my theory that people blow the seals in their turbos on 2.4's from pumping boost pressure into thier crank case which inturn pumps boost pressurized oil up the oil return line to the turbo. Unless you taken off the 2.4 intake manifold to see it you probably don't know it is there, but there is a PCV system built into the intake manifold gasket that connects to a hole in the head flange. When you turbocharge a 2.4 with the stock intake manifold and you actually pumping boost pressure into the crank case through the PCV system which puts backpressure on the oil return lne from the turbo.

I hope that made sense.....

So are you saying that if he takes out that pcv system it would be okay and relief some back pressure....... is it possible that the return is too small ????

I hear 1" is the way to go ......

5/8" is okay I guess.... but knowing of this common problem wouldn't a 1" help the situation ???? I'm asking SKILZ..... he's the Guru on 2.4's......

You can't just "unhook" the PCV system because it part of the intake manifold. It is working both, for and against you with boost. Off boost when the intake manifold is under vacuum it is working for you by sucking out crank case pressure but when you are under boost is working against you by adding boost pressure to the crank case.

So how do you over come that problem then with the pcv system? If you can't unhook it, how do you prevent the seals from blowing? Use the 2.3 mani?

Using a 2.3 intake manifold solves half of the problem by blocking the PCV hole in the head flange so boost pressure can not enter the crank case.

On my motor i am using a 2.3 HO intake manifold that i modded to still function with the PCV hole in the 2.4 head. The PCV hole on the 2.4 head flange will be blocked by the 2.3 intake manifold flange, so the 2.3 intake manifold flange needs to be modded to use it. On my intake manifold i drilled and tapped a hole on the flange and then threaded a barb fitting into it, from that barb fitting i connect a 2" section of vacuum hose to a small clear fuel filter from a lawn mower. The reason for the fuel filter is to collect any oil vapor being sucked from the crank case before they go to the intake manifold, using a clear filter will allow you to see when it gets full of oil and needs to be replaced. Then from the filter run another small section of vacuum hose to a check valve, the check valve will allow the PCV system suck out pressure when the intake manifold is under vacuum but block boost pressure from going in while the intake manifold is under boost pressure. Then from the check valve i run another section of vacuum hose to any port on the intake manifold plenum. Any questions???

Ive looked at your cardomain page a few times. Im going to go look now again so I can try to understand better what your talking about hehe.. But I have a general Idea of what your saying though.. I have a 2.2 right now in my car. Im swapping in my 2.4 engine and still trying to learn about it. Thanks.
