Ok so I am puting together my exhust and there is defintly going to be a muff. but im not sure about adding a cat. I want to try and pass emitions so its almost a must, but I dont want to kill my self in performance. my wastegate is set at 10 pounds with a big ass turbo like 60/68 the point is theres a lot of flow in and Im worried that a 3inch back with muff and ress is just to restictive. what do you guys think?

Short answer: Probably.

Longer answer: Without any exhaust on a turbo car you have the best possible (not concerning any type of fancy exhaust pulse shaping or anything) pressure differential with which to act across the turbine. The question is how much deviation from this "ideal" are you willing to put up with? But before that, ask yourself how much you will realistically be sacrificing by adding a cat/muff. The answer is probably not enough to interfere with your desired maximum boost. If you put the cat/muff on and realize that you're maxing out boost, then you can always remove one or the other in hopes of alleviating that. A much better question to start with, and one that will have a lot more impact I think, is what is the correct turbo for your car and desired boost levels.

why dont you just put on a muffler but make it easily removable so you could then just bolt on a "test pipe" <~~ i believe thats what their called.

dont use a muffler, just a cat, that way you got the quitness that a muffler would provide, but it still passes for the feds

LOL, thats exactly what I did, but with 2.5". And I'm now hitting 4 psi with a FULL OPEN WASTEGATE. Scary what a big exhaust can do for a turboed car. I'm still gonna cat it tho.

Ya I do what you guys do , only more illegal. I got a down pipe that exits in front of my driverside front. It sounds like a trailor truck , it smells like ass, and i have many sound violation warnings to prove it. But its worth the flow . I always tell the cop "man i just did the turbo setup today and dont have enough time to do the exhaust " Then i ramble some more about downpipes and manifolds enough to bore any human , untill he lets me go.

That will work great for about 2 weeks. Until you get pulled over by the same cop twice or they start talking to each other. Believe me. Cops here know about my car and the cars we work on

I didn't get to read all the responses but I have this suggestion...

Jcavi, why don't you look into an exhaust dump that is either electronically controlled or boost activated. This would suit you best so you don't sound extremely loud all the time. I mean, I don't think you want to drive to the store and sound like a Mach Truck, do you? Plus there are too many negatives that you will face by not having a catalytic converter and it's mainly through the law. If you are caught, it's a huge fine.

If you want more info on the exhaust dumps, just let me know.

I'd go with the Dump. You can get a Y-Pipe and then get an electrically or manually controlled plate similar to a throttle plate that plugs the dump until you'rw ready for it. Then you just hit the button and you're ready to race. You can usually find the electrically controlled units on ebay or elsewhere. Thats what I am going to do when I get my turbo motor back in.
