hey folks.....i needs alittle help here. My cavy is ready to hit the streets AGAIN but im having a little trouble installing a few parts.
i have a MSD inline pump
and a vortech FMU (the purple one!)
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE explain how i HOOK these parts up TO MY 97cav 2.2L!
DETAILS DETAILS!!
hose sizes
fitting sizes
IM new at this engine scene so i really appreciate the help!
haha
phew, well as far as the inline goes, all i really know is you should put it as close to the stock one as you can, i beleive the way they work is by negating the stock one, so you'll need the power wires from the stock one to be hooked up to the inline one, and you might need a couple AN fittings depending on what you have. As for the FMU, you will need some AN fittings, you'll need to cut into the return line, hook the line that comes from the fuel rail into the "in" port on the FMU with some fuel hose, then hook another fuel hose (which you can get at an auto parts store for dirt cheap) on the "out" port back to the return line that goes back to the tank. Like i said, you'll need some AN fittings, I think the AN 6's fit fuel hose, you'll need the couplers in perticular because there probably isnt enough fuel line on there to get to where ever your going to mount the FMU. Im not familiar with the purple vortech, i have a blue vortech and there was only two ports on it, so im assuming its the same set up. After that you'll need to run a vacuum line to the FMU's pressure fitting. Most people Tee off of the vacuum line that hooks into your FPR, it should sit right on your fuel rail. You can also get pressure Tees from an auto parts store for a buck or so. On a side note, make sure the pressure hose fits well, you dont want any vacuum leaks, you should have a boost gauge i assume, if not make sure its a vacuum/boost gauge so you can see if there is a leak, and you'll probably want to Tee that off of the same pressure line. Hope this helps, its about all i can give you, hope others can chime in aswell with more info. Good luck!
better to mount the inline near the rear of the vehicle as close to the in tank pump as you can get. Inline pumps generally work better as "PUSHERS" rather than "PULLERS" when it comes to fuel flow.
As for power I ran a separate relay for the inline along with its own fuse which in turn the new relay is activated using the stock fuel pump relay. You really shouldn't run the inline in the same circuit as the fuel pump because of the increase in amperage required to operate them both. Plus if for whatever reason your inline shorts out it doesn't take your in tank pump with it. Good luck and be careful. It's fuel and you'll be playing with electricity. be sure to eliminate your battery before you start and then just grab a multi-meter and check everything before you return a voltage source. good luck
cant help with the vortech not familiar with it but from what i read from aboves explanation sounds correct as most FMUs are the same for hook-up

im getting great info so far......u guys are the best.......
hey im assuming that the longer fitting on the FMU is the "IN" port and the short fitting is the return "out".??? i bought this fmu from a good friend of mine so im clueless on the instructions......BUT U GUYS HELPED ME OUT GREATLY!!
haha
ya make sure that when you install the inline that it goes AFTER the fuel filter..... so nothing gets in there and by bye inline..... I don't know if they mentioned it above I'm in a ruch to leave so good luck

As for the FMU the fitting on the side of the unit is where the hose from the fuel rail connects, and the one on the bottom center is where the hose that heads back to the tank should go. And thanks California Domestics for correcting me on the in line fuel pump, i wouldnt want to give out the wrong information!
well the fmu is connected like so...
you must cut your return fuel line and add in the FMU inline ....
return from fuel rail -------- to the "in" side of the FMU ----- the "out" side of the FMU ----- the other side of the cut line going back to the tank.........
so if you cut your stock fuel line there will be 2 sides of the hose that need to go somewhere....

trust me....when my cav hits the streets i'll remember the good info!
Anyone have pics of the fmu and the lines, might be better to understand (for people like me lol).
